What it does

  • The two people counters above the entrances count separately who comes in and who goes out. They work with a thermal sensor and do not record images. The attendance figure by day and by time band distinguishes services, visits and periods of the year, and is also useful in grant applications.
  • Four temperature and relative humidity sensors send a reading every 10 minutes: nave, crypt, sacristy and a fourth point, for example the organ loft, a frescoed chapel or the parish archive.
  • The history shows the temperature and humidity swings produced by the heating switched on for services and the trend of humidity in the crypt through the seasons; when the set thresholds are exceeded a notification arrives.
  • The two tilt sensors, fixed to the bell tower and to a cracked wall, measure the angle on the three axes and compare it with the position recorded at installation: a change beyond the threshold generates an alarm.
  • The magnetic contacts report with an immediate notification the opening of the sacristy and of a cabinet, a safe or a valuable room, and record every access with date and time.
  • All the data can be consulted from a smartphone and from a PC with history, charts and notifications.
For more entrances or very wide doorways, more measuring points, several churches of the same parish or diocese, buildings with very thick masonry, or if there is no internet connection in the church and a 4G gateway is needed: tell us the characteristics of the building from the contacts section and we will propose the right configuration with a quotation.
Churches and places of worship kit Litio Store: installation diagram in a church with crypt, sacristy and bell tower
1Compact indoor LoRaWAN gateway in the sacristy or in the presbytery, connected to the network: it collects the data from all the sensors and takes it to the cloud.
2Thermal sensor people counter above the entrance, facing the floor. Two in the kit.
3Temperature and relative humidity sensor. Four in the kit: nave, crypt, sacristy and a fourth space.
4Tilt sensor fixed flush against the masonry. Two in the kit: bell tower and cracked wall.
5Magnetic contact on the inside of the sacristy door and of a valuable cabinet or room. Two in the kit.

How it is installed

Gateway. Compact indoor gateway, on a desk, on the wall or on the ceiling, in the sacristy or in the adjoining presbytery, where there is a socket and the network. IP30, operation from -20 to +50 °C: it goes in a dry room, not in the crypt and not in the belfry. Powered by USB-C at 5 V, or by PoE with an optional splitter; connection with an Ethernet cable or Wi-Fi. Among the available rooms the most central one with respect to the nave and the bell tower is chosen.
People counters at the entrances. On the ceiling or on the lintel, above the passage, at a height between 2 and 3 m, with the sensor facing the floor and tilted by no more than 15°. The width covered is 1.6 m when mounted at 2 m and reaches 3.6 m when mounted at 3 m. Where the doorway is higher, the lintel of the inner vestibule is a better choice. Away from fan heaters, air vents and draughts, with no metal parts directly below and no obstacles in the passage area. It is fixed with a plate, wall plugs and screws. Powered by USB-C at 5 V or by battery depending on the version.
Temperature and humidity sensors. On the wall with two screws or with double-sided tape, in spots representative of the space: away from heating vents, stoves, windows and entrance doors, and not in contact with metal masses. In the nave an unobtrusive position, for example behind a column or on the side of a confessional. They are IP67: in the crypt they work without trouble even with high humidity. Measuring range from -30 to +70 °C.
Tilt and openings. The tilt sensor must be fixed with wall plugs and screws fully flush against the surface, with no shims, with one of the three axes parallel to the direction to be monitored and with the vent not facing upwards; where drilling is not possible, the plate with cable ties is used on a beam or a structural element integral with the masonry. Once installed, the initial position is recorded. IP67, operation from -30 to +60 °C. Magnetic contacts on the inside of the door, with the two parts aligned no more than 20 mm apart, with screws or double-sided tape.
Configuration. By NFC with a smartphone and the manufacturer's free app: reading intervals, thresholds, initial position of the tilt sensors, names of the spaces. The gateway is configured from a browser. No cables and no paid software are needed.
Documentation included. A written installation guide with the heights and widths covered by the people counters, the criteria for choosing the measuring points, the orientation of the tilt sensors and the switch-on sequence, plus initial configuration of the thresholds based on the spaces and the objects given when ordering.

Before you order

There is no internet in the church: how does it work?

The gateway needs a connection at the point where it is installed: often it is enough to put it in the presbytery or in the parish office, if they adjoin the church, and use the network socket or the Wi-Fi that are already there. The sensors do not use Wi-Fi, they talk to the gateway by radio. Where there is no line at all, the version with a 4G gateway is available, which requires a data SIM (not included, any operator, traffic below 1 GB a month). It is selected when ordering.

Does the signal get through from the bell tower and the crypt?

Inside a building the range depends on walls and floors, and in churches the masonry is thick: the gateway should be placed in the most central room possible. For large buildings, very thick masonry, a bell tower detached from the body of the church or a distant presbytery, the «large building» version is available among the options, with a gateway of greater range, IP65 and which can be powered by PoE. One gateway handles hundreds of devices.

Does the people counter film the congregation?

No. It uses a thermal sensor, with no camera: it counts the passages and recognises their direction, it does not produce images. The stated accuracy reaches 90% and depends on the mounting height and on people's stature: it is an attendance figure, not access control. Each sensor covers an opening from 1.6 to 3.6 m wide depending on the mounting height; for wider doorways write to us from the contacts section.

Is the tilt sensor enough to monitor the bell tower?

It reports the changes in tilt with respect to the initial position, with a resolution of 0.01° and an accuracy of ±1°: it serves as continuous surveillance and as an alarm between one inspection and the next. It is not a precision structural monitoring instrument and it does not replace crack gauges, surveys and the assessments of the appointed engineer.

Do you have to drill into listed masonry?

As little as possible. Temperature and humidity sensors and magnetic contacts can also be fixed with double-sided tape. People counters and tilt sensors require a mechanical fixing: wall plugs, or brackets and cable ties on elements that are already there such as beams, railings and frames. On decorated or protected surfaces the fixing point must be agreed with whoever is responsible for the heritage object.

I have more churches or a larger complex

The kit is configured around the building: sensors are added for each entrance, space or structure to be monitored, and each church has its own gateway; the platform stays the same. Write to us from the contacts section giving the number of buildings, entrances, spaces and structures to be watched: we will send you the make-up and the quotation for the adapted kit.

Battery life

The temperature and humidity sensors have a replaceable lithium battery with a stated life of up to 10 years with one reading every 10 minutes at 25 °C; the tilt sensors about 4 years, the magnetic contacts about 5. The people counters in the battery version last about 1.7 years: where there is a socket near the entrance the USB-C powered version is the better choice. The charge level is visible in the app.

Where is the data consulted and are there any fees?

On the manufacturer's app and portal, from a smartphone and a PC, with charts, thresholds and notifications; no fee for basic use. Where there is a building management system of the diocese or of the foundation, the gateway can also send the data to that system (MQTT or HTTP): the configuration is included.

What happens if the internet is down?

The sensors keep measuring. The people counters store up to 1,000 records and retransmit them when the connection returns; for the other sensors, after a long interruption, a gap without data may remain in the history. While the line is missing, notifications are not sent.

Is an electrician needed? What protection rating do the devices have?

No electrician is needed: the sensors are battery powered and the gateway runs from a socket with a USB-C 5 V power adapter; the same applies to the people counters in the mains-powered version. Temperature and humidity sensors and tilt sensors are IP67, suitable for the crypt, the bell tower and outdoor mounting. People counters, magnetic contacts and gateway are for indoor use: IP30 and IP20.

What is not included
