The data logger is what turns an installation into a measurable one: it pulls data off the inverters over RS485 or Modbus, keeps it locally and sends it to the portal. On commercial sites it is often a contract requirement, since it is the proof of the expected yield.

A pyranometer adds a reading of actual irradiance, the only way to tell whether low output is down to the system or to the weather.
