New version of the Victron Energy DC-DC charger (Orion), rated 50 Amperes!
This Orion XS 12/12-50A model is intended for 12V systems. For 24V or mixed 12V/24V systems, the range includes the Orion XS 1400 model.
This version offers a great many innovative features compared to the previous versions, which were rated 18 Amperes and 30 Amperes (at 12 Volt)
First of all, the power, which now reaches 50 Amperes (700 Watt), but can easily be set to a lower value via Bluetooth.
The dimensions are significantly smaller than the previous models, despite the higher power.
The heat sink is also gone, which was present on the less powerful models. In fact, the new 50 Ampere model generates very little heat, thanks to a significant improvement in efficiency, which has reached 98.5% (in the previous models it was 85%, meaning much more heat was generated).
This new model also features a Victron VE.Direct interface, so it can be connected to the Cerbo GX and will be fully integrated with the rest of the Victron Energy system.
Another interesting new feature is the IP65 protection rating, which makes it practically waterproof and therefore suitable for installations in particularly damp locations.
This model, like the previous ones, is a true 4-stage charger (bulk, absorption, float, and storage).
It works with any type of alternator, both traditional and smart. It has a system to detect whether the engine is running, so installation is extremely simple.
In standby it has an extremely low draw, just 1.5 mA (milliamps), so over a month of standby operation it consumes only 1 Ah of the battery!
Of course, this new model is also fully configurable from your smartphone or tablet via Bluetooth. Just install the Victron Connect app.
The 50 Ampere output current can also be reduced via this app. This is a useful feature when, for example, the alternator isn't very powerful and overheats at full power. Or when the battery has too low a capacity and would be damaged if charged with 50 Amperes of current. Example: you have a 100 Ah AGM battery, but you already know that in the future you'll replace it with a 100 Ah lithium battery. The AGM you have now must be charged with a maximum of 20 Amperes so as not to damage it, so you lower the DC-DC charger's power to 20A. When you switch to the lithium battery, you can once again increase the charger's power up to 50 Amperes.
