Here's the typical question (a completely legitimate one): But doesn't this drain the engine battery?

No, because the Battery to Battery charger starts up and begins charging the house batteries only when it detects that the starter battery is being charged, i.e. when the alternator is producing current, so in practice it draws current not from the engine battery, but from the alternator itself.

As soon as the engine is switched off, the alternator stops producing power, so within a few seconds the engine battery's voltage drops below 13 Volt. At this point the Battery to Battery charger switches off automatically.
