Aqara and Alexa kit for older people living alone: remote assistance, falls and SOS

For sons and daughters who want to know how a parent living alone is getting on, with no cameras in the house. A presence sensor detects falls, a button sends an SOS, smoke, flood and fridge-door sensors flag problems and daily habits, and the Echo Dot allows voice calls. Notifications to the family's phones from the Aqara Home app.

What it does

  • The Aqara FP2 millimetre-wave presence sensor detects whether anyone is in the room, even sitting still; mounted on the ceiling it can report a fall, as the manufacturer describes.
  • The T1 mini button, kept on the bedside table or in a pocket, sends the family a call for help at one press.
  • The smoke detector sounds in the house and sends the alarm to the family's phones as well.
  • The leak sensor in the bathroom or the kitchen warns you if there is water on the floor, from a tap left running for example.
  • The contact on the fridge door confirms that the day is going normally: if it has not been opened by a certain time, an alert goes out.
  • With the Echo Dot a parent can call a relative by voice, without hunting for the phone.

4Aqara smoke detector on the ceiling, in the hallway or near the kitchen.

How it is installed

Hub and network. The M100 hub plugs into a USB power supply, included in the kit, in a central spot in the home, and connects to 2.4GHz Wi-Fi. A stable internet connection is needed at the parent's home: that is what carries the notifications to the family. In the Aqara Home app, family members are invited as members of the home so that they receive the alerts.
Presence sensor. The FP2 runs off a USB power supply and goes in the room that is used most, usually the living room or the bedroom. For fall detection it has to be ceiling-mounted at the centre of the area to be covered, at the heights the manufacturer states; on a wall it detects presence and zones but not falls. It connects straight to Wi-Fi and is managed in the same app.
Sensors and button. The smoke detector fixes to the ceiling, away from the hob and the bathroom. The leak sensor lies flat on the floor where water would reach first. The contact sticks onto the fridge, with the magnet on the door. The button goes where the parent will always find it: bedside table, pocket, or on a lanyard in a suitable holder.
App and Alexa. In Aqara Home you add the hub, then pair the button, the smoke and leak sensors and the contact with it; the FP2 is added separately over Wi-Fi. The Echo Dot is set up in the Alexa app: add the family as contacts, so the parent can call them by saying “Alexa, call…”. Link the Aqara skill as well, to use the devices in Alexa routines.
Recommended automations. Button pressed: urgent notification to all the family. Fall detected by the FP2: immediate notification. Smoke or water: alarm and notification. Fridge not opened by mid-morning: a "no activity" alert. No presence in the bedroom at night for several hours: alert. The time thresholds adapt to the parent's habits over the first few weeks.
Contents verified. The button, the smoke detector, the flood sensor and the contact are Aqara Zigbee and pair with the M100 hub; the FP2 presence sensor works over Wi-Fi in the same Aqara Home app, where every device goes into the same automations and notifications. The Echo Dot is added through the Alexa app. The hub and the FP2 are USB powered and the power supply is not in the box: that is why the kit includes 5V USB power supplies.

Before you order

Do you need a hub?

Yes, for the button, the smoke and flood detectors and the contact: the Aqara Hub M100 included links them to the Wi-Fi and to the Aqara Home app. The FP2 presence sensor, on the other hand, joins the Wi-Fi directly. The Echo Dot is a device of its own, run from the Alexa app.

Is it a telecare service?

No. The kit sends notifications to the family's phones through the app, but there is no control room answering and it is not a medical device. It needs a working internet connection and someone to receive the alerts. Anyone who needs constant care should also have a telecare service.

How does fall detection work?

The FP2 sensor uses millimetre waves and records no images. Fall detection needs ceiling mounting as the manufacturer specifies and covers the room it is fitted in, not the whole house. For the first few weeks it is worth checking the notifications and adjusting the zones in the app.

Does it work with Alexa, Google and Apple?

The M100 hub supports Matter, and Aqara devices also reach Alexa and Google Home through the Aqara Home app integration; and Apple Home through Matter or HomeKit where the product supports it, as the manufacturer states. History, notifications and the full automations stay in the Aqara Home app.

Do you need an electrician?

No. The hub, the FP2 and the Echo Dot plug into a socket, the sensors are battery-powered and fix with double-sided tape or screws. For ceiling mounting the FP2 you only need to run the USB cable neatly to the nearest socket.

What happens if there is no internet?

Automations between devices paired to the same hub carry on locally, as the manufacturer specifies, and the sensors carry on detecting. Without internet, though, notifications do not reach your phone and you cannot see or control anything from away. When the line comes back everything resumes on its own.

Are batteries included?

The button, the smoke detector, the flood sensor and the contact run on batteries, supplied in the box as the manufacturer states. The family can see the charge level in the app and change the battery on their next visit, before it runs out.

What if a product is out of stock on Amazon?

An item can go out of stock or change version. Get in touch through the contact page quoting the kit code: we will point you to an alternative that works with the other devices and with the coordinator, so the kit stays complete and performs as intended.

Why buy on Amazon?

Purchase, delivery, returns and warranty are handled by Amazon: delivery times, returns and warranty are shown on Amazon when you buy. The kit itself is our own work: we picked devices that work together and the accessories needed to fit them.
