Sonoff radiator valve kit for Home Assistant, 6 radiators

For anyone who already runs Home Assistant: the Sonoff Zigbee Plus MG24 dongle adds the Zigbee network and six Sonoff TRV Gen2 thermostatic heads control six radiators. In Home Assistant you build per-room schedules and presence-based automations, all locally. Control comes from the Home Assistant app and, through its integrations, from Alexa, Google Home and Apple Home.

InstallationExperienced DIY: dongle into Home Assistant, valve heads in place of the manual knobs.

What it does

  • The MG24 dongle acts as the Zigbee coordinator for Home Assistant, through the ZHA integration or Zigbee2MQTT.
  • Each TRV Gen2 head opens and closes the radiator valve to hold the temperature set for the room.
  • In Home Assistant you build a schedule for each room, with calendars, time slots and different temperatures on weekdays and at weekends.
  • The automations use phone presence: when the last phone leaves, the heads drop to the setback temperature; when someone gets close to home, they go back to comfort.
  • If window sensors are already in Home Assistant, the head in that room closes while the room is being aired.
  • Everything runs locally: the programmes do not depend on the cloud.
For more radiators, room and window sensors or boiler control from Home Assistant, write to us from the contacts section and we will suggest the right configuration.

How to install it

Coordinator and network. The MG24 dongle plugs into a USB port on the computer running Home Assistant, using the kit's 1.5-metre extension lead: keeping it away from the computer and from USB 3 ports reduces interference with the Zigbee signal. In Home Assistant you add the ZHA integration, or set up Zigbee2MQTT, and select the dongle as the coordinator.
Thermostatic radiator heads. Unscrew the manual knob from each radiator and screw on the TRV Gen2, either directly or with the adapter that suits the valve body, following the manufacturer's instructions. There is no need to drain the system. The valve has to be made for a thermostatic head; those with only a screw knob have to be replaced by a plumber.
Extension lead and batteries. The USB extension lead is there to move the dongle into the clear, away from metal parts and from the router. The valve heads run on AA batteries; the optional pack of lithium AA cells in the kit is there as a spare. Before pairing the heads it is worth updating Home Assistant and the Zigbee integration.
Pairing. In Home Assistant you start the Zigbee device pairing and add the valve heads one at a time, beginning with the one closest to the dongle. Each head is calibrated to the valve travel, renamed and assigned to its area. Check that your model is supported by the version of ZHA or Zigbee2MQTT you are running.
Recommended automations. A per-room schedule driven by a calendar entity or by time slots; setback temperature when every phone is away from home and comfort as soon as the first one comes back; the valve head closed if a window in the room stays open for more than two minutes. A dashboard with the six rooms lets you see and change everything from a single screen.
Contents verified. The Sonoff Zigbee Plus MG24 dongle is a Zigbee coordinator supported by Home Assistant with ZHA and Zigbee2MQTT, and the TRV Gen2 valve heads pair to its network. The kit includes the USB extension lead to keep the dongle away from Home Assistant and from the Wi-Fi, and optionally a pack of spare lithium AA batteries.

Before you order

Do you need a hub?

You need Home Assistant, which you must already have, and the kit's Zigbee dongle, which acts as the network coordinator. No other hub is needed, nor the app from the maker of the valve heads: everything is set up in Home Assistant.

Does it work with Alexa, Google and Apple?

Yes, through Home Assistant. For Apple Home you use the HomeKit Bridge integration, which is included and free. For Alexa and Google Home you go through the Home Assistant Cloud subscription service or set it up manually.

Do I need an electrician or a plumber?

Not if the radiators have thermostatic-ready valves: you unscrew the knob and screw the head on, with no need to drain the system. The dongle plugs in over USB. Valves with a plain screw knob have to be replaced by a plumber first.

What happens if the internet goes down?

Everything carries on working: Home Assistant, the dongle and the heads run locally, with the programmes and automations stored in the house. All you lose is access from outside and the voice commands that go through the cloud.

Should I use ZHA or Zigbee2MQTT?

The dongle works with both. ZHA is built into Home Assistant and is the quickest way to start; Zigbee2MQTT needs an MQTT broker but offers more options for many devices. For the valve heads it is worth checking which of the two supports every function of the model in the version you are running.

Are batteries included?

The TRV Gen2 heads run on AA batteries, as stated by the manufacturer; the kit includes an optional pack of spare lithium AA cells. Home Assistant shows the charge level of every head.

Can I add devices?

Yes: more valve heads, temperature and window sensors, relays and devices from many brands can be added to the dongle's Zigbee network. Mains-powered devices, such as the relays, strengthen coverage for the furthest heads.

What if a product is out of stock on Amazon?

Write to us from the contact section quoting the kit code: we will point you to an alternative that fits the other parts, so the kit keeps working as described. Avoid swapping a component for a similar model without first checking the protocol and the compatibility with the rest of the system.

Why buy on Amazon?

Purchase, delivery, returns and warranty are handled by Amazon, under the terms shown to you when you order. We put the kit together and checked it ourselves: the parts are chosen to work together and the cart adds them all, in the right quantities, in a single step.
