What it does

  • Home Assistant Green, with the Connect ZWA-2 adapter, runs the Z-Wave network locally: automations and history stay in the house, with no cloud.
  • The Shelly Wave Pro 3 on DIN rail in the board drives three circuits: outside lights, pump, towel rail or other loads within the limits stated by the manufacturer.
  • The Wave i4 reads four existing buttons or switches and turns them into scene commands for Home Assistant.
  • The battery-powered Wave H&T reads temperature and humidity in the chosen room and makes them available for charts and automations.
  • The Wave PM Mini meters the consumption of a circuit or an appliance: the figure lands in Home Assistant's energy dashboard.
  • Z-Wave works on a different frequency from Wi-Fi and, in Long Range mode, reaches far corners of the house or the garden.
Need more circuits, roller shutters or Z-Wave dimmers, or want to bring an existing installation into Home Assistant? Get in touch through the contact page and we will build the kit for you.
Long-range Z-Wave Shelly Wave home kit: installation diagram
1Home Assistant Green next to the router, wired with a network cable: it runs devices, automations and the app.
2Home Assistant Connect ZWA-2 adapter, plugged into the Green over USB and placed high up and away from metal: this is the Z-Wave radio.
3Shelly Wave Pro 3 on DIN rail in the enclosure: it switches three circuits.
4Shelly Wave i4 in the box behind the wall push-buttons: four inputs for scene commands.
5Shelly Wave H&T on the living room wall: temperature and humidity.
6Shelly Wave PM Mini in the junction box of the circuit to be measured: energy consumption.

How it is installed

Home Assistant and Z-Wave radio. Home Assistant Green goes next to the router and connects with the network cable; it is set up from the browser or from the Home Assistant app. The Connect ZWA-2 adapter plugs into the Green over USB and sits high up, away from the router and metal objects, as the manufacturer instructs. In Home Assistant you add the Z-Wave integration, which picks up the adapter.
Module in the board. With the installation isolated at the main board, the Wave Pro 3 mounts on DIN rail in the BTicino consumer unit included, where it takes up three modules and leaves room spare. The supply and the three outputs to the circuits being switched are wired to the manufacturer's diagram, within the stated maximum currents. Work on 230V must be carried out by qualified personnel.
Modules in the back boxes plus wiring. The Wave i4 goes in the box behind the buttons that will call up the scenes; the Wave PM Mini in the junction box of the circuit to be measured. The joints are made with the included Wago lever connectors, and conductors in the board are terminated with the crimp ferrules. The battery-powered Wave H&T fixes to the wall at about 1.5 m, away from radiators and windows.
Pairing. In Home Assistant you add the Z-Wave devices one at a time, either by scanning the device QR code (SmartStart) or with the manufacturer's inclusion procedure. It pays to photograph the QR codes before you close up the board and the boxes. Give every entity the name of the room and the circuit, then install the Home Assistant app on the phones in the house.
Recommended automations. One Wave i4 button for everything off as you leave and one for the outside lights. A Wave Pro 3 circuit on a schedule for the garden lights or the pump. An alert if the humidity at the Wave H&T goes above the threshold you choose. An energy dashboard with the consumption of the circuit measured by the PM Mini and a notification for unusual consumption.
Contents verified. Every Shelly Wave device in the kit is Z-Wave and is run by Home Assistant Green through the official Connect ZWA-2 adapter, which also supports Long Range mode. The kit includes the 8-module BTicino surface enclosure, for the Wave Pro 3 (three DIN ways) plus spare, the Wago 221-413 lever connectors for the module joints and the crimp ferrules for wiring inside the board.

Before you order

Do you need a hub?

Yes, and it is included: Home Assistant Green is the hub, and the Connect ZWA-2 adapter gives it the Z-Wave radio. Shelly Wave devices do not use Wi-Fi and cannot be controlled without a Z-Wave controller. The Green connects to the router with a network cable.

Why Z-Wave rather than Wi-Fi?

Z-Wave is a network dedicated to home automation, on a different frequency from Wi-Fi: it does not take up Wi-Fi bandwidth and does not depend on the router to control the devices. Mains-powered modules act as repeaters and Long Range mode increases direct range towards distant points, as the manufacturer states.

Does it work with Alexa, Google and Apple?

Yes, by going through Home Assistant. With Apple Home via Home Assistant's HomeKit Bridge integration, free and local. With Alexa and Google Home via Home Assistant Cloud, a subscription service, or by setting it up by hand. Z-Wave devices do not reach voice assistants directly.

Do you need an electrician?

Yes. The modules wire into the 230V line, behind the switches, in the junction boxes or in the board: the connections must be made by qualified personnel, with the installation isolated at the main board. The Wave Pro 3 goes on DIN rail in the consumer unit, the Wave i4 and the PM Mini in the wall boxes.

What happens if there is no internet?

Almost nothing changes: Home Assistant works locally and the Z-Wave network does not use the internet, so automations, control from the home network and the switches all keep working. With the line down you only lose control from outside the house and the voice assistants, which come back with the connection.

Can I add devices?

Yes: Home Assistant handles plenty of Z-Wave devices, including those from other brands, as well as Wi-Fi and, with the right radio, Zigbee and Matter. You can add more Shelly Wave modules for lights, roller shutters and dimmers, Z-Wave opening or flood sensors, and drive them all from the same automations.

Are batteries included?

The Wave H&T takes a CR123A cell, normally supplied in the manufacturer's box: check this on the Amazon listing. The other devices run off the 230V line and Home Assistant Green off its own power supply.

What if a product is out of stock on Amazon?

Get in touch through the contact page quoting the kit code: we will point you to a compatible alternative, with the same protocol and the same functions, so the rest of the kit stays as it is and the installation instructions still hold.

Why buy on Amazon?

Purchase, delivery, returns and warranty are handled by Amazon: delivery times, returns and warranty are shown on Amazon when you buy. The kit is our own work: the products work together and the basket already holds them in the right quantities.
