Energy audit kit with Shelly EM and metering sockets

For energy managers and solar installers who need to see where a customer's energy is going: a two-channel Shelly EM with two 50A current clamps, in a small enclosure next to the board, and four Shelly Plug S MTR Gen3 plugs to measure individual appliances. Data and graphs from the app, over Wi-Fi.

What it does

  • The Shelly EM meters the energy of two circuits with two 50A current clamps: the house main and the solar generation for example, or two circuits in the board.
  • The clamps close around the conductor without breaking into it: metering is added without altering the circuits.
  • The four Shelly Plug S MTR Gen3 sockets meter the consumption of individual plug-in appliances, such as a fridge, a freezer, a portable heat pump or an oven, and can switch them on and off.
  • The Shelly app shows instantaneous power, daily consumption and history, useful for the audit report.
  • The sockets are Matter-compatible and can also be added to Apple Home, Alexa or Google Home.
For three-phase installations, more circuits to measure or an audit logged in Home Assistant, get in touch through the contact page: we will put together the right kit for your type of installation.

How it is installed

The customer's Wi-Fi network. The Shelly EM and the sockets connect straight to the customer's Wi-Fi on the 2.4GHz band, with no hub. Before you start, check the signal near the board, often in an awkward spot such as a garage or a cellar. If the signal is weak, a temporary repeater can be used for the length of the audit.
Shelly EM and clamps. With the supply isolated, the Shelly EM mounts on the rail of the surface-mounted Electraline enclosure included, next to the board, where it takes up two modules and leaves room spare. It is powered from the line and the two clamps are wired to the manufacturer's diagram, closed around the line conductor only and the right way round. Work on 230V must be carried out by qualified personnel.
Wiring and sockets. The supply conductors are terminated with the crimp ferrules included, the joints made with Wago lever connectors. The Plug S sockets go between the wall socket and the appliances you want to monitor, starting with the ones you suspect use most or run continuously. Do not use them with extension leads or overloaded extension blocks.
App and setup. Switch the supply back on, add the EM and the sockets in the Shelly app, update the firmware and name each channel after its circuit or appliance. Check that the power reads positive in the expected direction; if it is reversed, turn the clamp round. If the customer runs Home Assistant, the devices integrate locally and the data lands in the energy dashboard.
Recommended automations. During the audit, a notification when the power at the main incomer goes above the meter threshold. An alert if an appliance on a socket is left on overnight drawing heavily. With solar, switching a load on a socket when generation exceeds import, to test the scope for self-consumption. At the end, export the history data for the report.
Contents verified. The Shelly EM, the 50A Shelly current clamps and the Shelly Plug S MTR Gen3 sockets are managed from the same app, with no hub. The two clamps are included for the EM's two channels. The kit also includes the 4-module Electraline surface enclosure, for the EM's two DIN modules plus spare, the crimp ferrules for the wiring in the board and the Wago 221-413 lever connectors for the connections.

Before you order

Do you need a hub?

No. The Shelly EM and the Plug S units connect straight to the customer's Wi-Fi and are read from the Shelly app. You need a router with good 2.4GHz coverage near the panel and at the points where the plugs go.

Does it work with Alexa, Google and Apple?

The Plug S MTR Gen3 sockets are Matter devices: they are added to Apple Home, Alexa and Google Home and can be switched on and off by voice. The Shelly EM is a measuring instrument: its data is read in the Shelly app and in Home Assistant, not through the voice assistants.

Do you need an electrician?

Yes. The modules wire into the 230V line, behind the switches, in the junction boxes or in the board: the connections must be made by qualified personnel, with the installation isolated at the main board. The Shelly EM takes its supply from the line and the clamps go in the board: both must be fitted by qualified personnel.

Can I use it for more than one client?

Yes: when the audit is over you remove the EM and the sockets, reset them to factory settings and fit them at the next client. Otherwise the kit stays in place as a permanent monitoring system.

What happens if there is no internet?

Metering carries on over the home network and the sockets are controlled locally, as the manufacturer specifies. Without internet the data cannot be consulted from away; with Home Assistant the logging stays entirely local.

Does it work on a three-phase supply?

No: the Shelly EM in the kit is single-phase, with two channels. A three-phase installation needs a dedicated three-phase meter: get in touch through the contact page and we will tell you the right model.

Are batteries included?

Not needed: the Shelly EM is powered from the 230V circuit and the plugs from the wall socket. There are no battery-powered devices in the kit. If you add battery sensors or buttons later, the battery type is given in each product's specifications and normally comes in the box.

What if a product is out of stock on Amazon?

Get in touch through the contact page quoting the kit code: we will point you to a compatible alternative, with the same protocol and the same functions, so the rest of the kit stays as it is and the installation instructions still hold.

Why buy on Amazon?

Purchase, delivery, returns and warranty are handled by Amazon: delivery times, returns and warranty are shown on Amazon when you buy. The kit is our own work: the products work together and the basket already holds them in the right quantities.
