Reliable network kit for home automation, mesh Wi-Fi and UPS

Wi-Fi home automation only works well if the network reaches everywhere and never goes down. The kit brings TP-Link Deco M4 mesh Wi-Fi to every room, with a single network that modules, sockets and cameras stay connected to, and a 500VA APC UPS that keeps the modem on through short power cuts.

Who it is forLarge houses, or houses on several floors, where the router's Wi-Fi does not reach every room.

What it does

  • The Deco M4 units create a single mesh Wi-Fi network with the same name throughout the house: modules, sockets and cameras join whichever unit is nearest.
  • The network runs both on 2.4GHz, the band most smart home devices use, and on 5GHz for phones and computers.
  • The 500VA APC Back-UPS keeps the modem, the main Deco and any home automation hub running through short power cuts and protects them from surges.
  • After a power cut the smart home should not have to reconnect from scratch: the network stays up for as long as the UPS battery lasts.
  • The Deco app shows the connected devices and how well the units are talking to each other, and lets you set up a separate guest network.
For very large houses, several floors, an annexe or gardens to cover, or for a UPS with longer runtime, get in touch through the contact page: we will tell you how many units and which model to use.

1TP-Link Deco M4 mesh Wi-Fi units: the main one next to the modem, the others halfway towards the far rooms. The number of units is the number in the kit's box.
2APC Back-UPS BX500MI next to the modem: it powers the modem, the main Deco and any hub through short power cuts.

How it is installed

Modem and UPS. The UPS goes on the floor next to the modem, somewhere ventilated, and plugs into the wall socket. Its protected outlets take the modem's power supply, the main Deco's and, if you want, the home automation hub's. Before use, leave the battery to charge for as long as the manufacturer states.
Main Deco unit. The first Deco connects with the network cable in the box to a port on the operator's modem or router. You create the network in the Deco app, choosing the name and password. Use the same name and password as the current network: smart home devices already set up will reconnect on their own.
Satellite unit. The other units go halfway between the main Deco and the areas with no coverage, high up and in the open, not inside cupboards or behind the TV. Where possible they are linked to the main unit with network cable, for a steadier connection. The app shows the quality of the link between the units and, if it is weak, you move them closer.
Home automation setup. In the Deco app check the 2.4GHz band is on: many home automation devices use nothing else. If the provider's router stays on with its own Wi-Fi, it is worth switching that off and leaving only the Deco network, to avoid two networks fighting each other. Give the home automation devices names in the list, so you can tell them apart.
Recommended checks. After installation, use the smart home app to check that every device shows as online, room by room. Test the UPS by pulling the plug out of the wall socket for a few seconds: the modem and the Deco must stay on. Check the Deco app now and then for firmware updates.
Contents verified. The Deco M4 units form a single mesh system managed by the Deco app and work with any operator's modem or router. The APC Back-UPS BX500MI is there to keep the modem and the main Deco powered through short cuts: 500VA suits low-consumption devices like these, not appliances or desktop computers.

Before you order

Do you need a hub?

No: this kit does not control devices, it makes the Wi-Fi network they run on reliable. It is useful with any Wi-Fi home automation, such as Shelly, Sonoff or Tapo, and with hubs connected to the router, such as Home Assistant or Zigbee bridges.

Do I need to change my modem?

No. The main Deco connects by cable to your provider's modem or router, which stays where it is for the internet connection. The Deco units provide the home Wi-Fi; it is worth switching off the Wi-Fi on the provider's router to avoid having two networks.

Does it work with Alexa, Google and Apple?

The kit takes no voice commands: it is the network that voice assistants and connected devices run on. Alexa, Google Home and Apple Home work better because speakers, hubs and modules stay connected in every room.

Do you need an electrician?

No: you only plug the power supplies into sockets and connect the network cables, and setup is done from the Deco app. If you want to link the units by cable through the installation's conduits, the data cables must be run separately from the 230V conductors.

How long does the UPS last in a power cut?

It depends how many devices are plugged in and how much they draw: with the modem and the main Deco it covers short power cuts and voltage dips, as specified by the manufacturer. It is not meant to give hours of runtime or to power appliances. For longer runtime, get in touch through the contact page.

What happens if there is no internet?

The home network stays up: smart devices with local control carry on working over Wi-Fi and the Deco units stay linked to each other. Without the line you lose control from away, the voice assistants and the cloud services.

Can I add units?

Yes: more compatible Deco units are added from the app to the same system, to cover another floor, an annexe or the garden. Get in touch through the contact page if you are unsure which model to add.

What if a product is out of stock on Amazon?

Get in touch through the contact page quoting the kit code: we will point you to a compatible alternative, with the same protocol and the same functions, so the rest of the kit stays as it is and the installation instructions still hold.

Why buy on Amazon?

Purchase, delivery, returns and warranty are handled by Amazon: delivery times, returns and warranty are shown on Amazon when you buy. The kit is our own work: the products work together and the basket already holds them in the right quantities.
