Smart home kit · Zigbee and Thread over the network
Zigbee coordinator over a PoE network, with Home Assistant

Home Assistant Green next to the router and the Sonoff Dongle Max PoE coordinator in the middle of the house, on a network cable that also carries power from the PoE switch. It is the basis for a stable Zigbee or Thread network in large houses with the router in the cellar: the devices are chosen separately.

What it does

  • The Sonoff Dongle Max PoE is a Zigbee and Thread coordinator that joins the network with a cable: it can be installed in the middle of the house, even far from the router.
  • The TP-Link TL-SG1005P switch, five Gigabit ports of which four are PoE, powers the dongle through the network cable and adds free ports next to the router.
  • Home Assistant Green reaches the coordinator over the home network and runs locally the Zigbee or Thread devices you add.
  • With the coordinator in the middle, sensors and modules in distant rooms connect over fewer hops and the network is steadier.
  • Everything stays local: automations, history and app control work without the cloud as well.
The kit is the infrastructure: tell us through the contact page which rooms and which functions you want to automate and we will point you to the compatible Zigbee or Thread devices to add.

How it is installed

Home Assistant and switch. Home Assistant Green and the TP-Link PoE switch go next to the router. The switch connects to the router with a short network cable, Home Assistant Green to a port on the switch. Home Assistant is set up from the browser or from the app. The router stays where it is, cellar or plant room included.
Coordinator in the middle of the house. The Dongle Max PoE fixes somewhere central, for example high up in the main-floor corridor, away from metalwork, electrical boards and the Wi-Fi router. It connects with the included 10 m Cat6 cable to a PoE port on the switch, which powers it: no socket is needed near the dongle.
Network cable. The cable is run in trunking or in a conduit meant for data cables, never alongside 230V conductors: if it has to pass through the board or through electrical conduit, you need an electrician. For runs longer than 10 metres you need a longer cable. Check the switch LEDs: the dongle's port has to show as powered.
Setup in Home Assistant. In Home Assistant you add the Zigbee integration (ZHA or Zigbee2MQTT), giving the coordinator's network address as the manufacturer describes. To use it with Thread you flash the dedicated firmware. Give the dongle a fixed address from the router, so Home Assistant always finds it.
Recommended automations. A notification if the coordinator stops answering, so a problem on the cable or on the PoE supply shows up straight away. Then, with the devices you add: lights and roller shutters on a schedule, opening and leak alerts, climate by room. Add the mains-powered devices first, since they act as repeaters.
Contents verified. The Sonoff Dongle Max PoE is a network coordinator that Home Assistant recognises and reaches over the local network. The TP-Link TL-SG1005P switch is there to power it over PoE and to link Home Assistant Green to the router; the 10 m Cat6 network cable is for the run from the dongle to the switch.

Before you order

Do you need a hub?

The hub is included: Home Assistant Green runs the devices and the automations, and the Dongle Max PoE is the Zigbee or Thread radio. The kit contains no end devices: Zigbee or Thread sensors, modules and sockets are added separately.

Why a coordinator on the network?

A USB coordinator has to sit next to Home Assistant, and therefore next to the router, often in the cellar. With the PoE dongle the radio goes into the middle of the house on a single cable for data and power, and the devices on the far floors connect better.

Does it work with Alexa, Google and Apple?

Through Home Assistant, yes: with Apple Home via the HomeKit Bridge integration, free and local; with Alexa and Google Home via Home Assistant Cloud, on subscription, or with a manual setup. Zigbee devices do not connect to voice assistants directly.

Do you need an electrician?

Not for the kit itself: it is a matter of connecting network cables and setting up Home Assistant. If the cable has to run in electrical conduit or in the board you do need an electrician, because data cables must not be run alongside 230V conductors. The devices you add later may call for one.

What happens if there is no internet?

Home Assistant and the coordinator work on the local network, so automations and commands from the home network carry on. With the line down you lose control from outside the house and the voice assistants. If the switch loses power the coordinator goes off: with a UPS it stays up.

Which devices can I add?

Zigbee devices from plenty of brands, such as Sonoff, Aqara, IKEA and Philips Hue, that work with Home Assistant, or Thread devices if you load the Thread firmware on the dongle. Get in touch through the contact page with the rooms and functions you are interested in and we will suggest what to put together.

Are batteries included?

Not for this kit: Home Assistant Green and the switch are mains-powered, the coordinator runs off the PoE switch. Batteries only concern the sensors you add later, and they normally come in their own boxes.

What if a product is out of stock on Amazon?

Get in touch through the contact page quoting the kit code: we will point you to a compatible alternative, with the same protocol and the same functions, so the rest of the kit stays as it is and the installation instructions still hold.

Why buy on Amazon?

Purchase, delivery, returns and warranty are handled by Amazon: delivery times, returns and warranty are shown on Amazon when you buy. The kit is our own work: the products work together and the basket already holds them in the right quantities.
