Z-Wave energy kit with Shelly Wave PM Mini on 4 circuits

Four Shelly Wave PM Mini units meter four household circuits over a Z-Wave network, separate from the Wi-Fi, and Home Assistant Green with the Sonoff Z-Wave 800 Plus dongle collects the data locally. The Home Assistant energy dashboard shows what each circuit uses, hour by hour, with no cloud.

What it does

  • Each Shelly Wave PM Mini goes in series with a circuit and measures its power and energy.
  • Home Assistant Green with the Sonoff Z-Wave 800 Plus dongle gathers the readings locally and keeps them in the history.
  • The Home Assistant energy dashboard shows consumption per circuit, by day and by month.
  • You set a notification for when a circuit goes over a given power, the oven together with the washing machine for example.
  • Mains-powered modules repeat the Z-Wave signal and make the network more stable.
More circuits, metering on the main incomer or on the PV? Get in touch from the contact page and we will suggest the right configuration for the board.

How it is installed

Control unit and radio receiver. Home Assistant Green connects to the router with a network cable and runs off its own power supply. The Sonoff Z-Wave 800 Plus dongle goes into a USB port on the Green, better on a USB extension lead to keep it away from the case and the router. First start-up is done from the browser, following the wizard.
Metering modules. The electrician isolates the supply and wires each Shelly Wave PM Mini in series with the circuit to be measured, following the manufacturer's diagram: oven, washing machine, heat pump or the circuit of one floor. Each circuit has to stay within the maximum current the manufacturer states. Work on 230V by qualified personnel only, with the power off.
Boxes and connections. The modules go in the junction boxes or behind a dedicated socket; if there is not enough room, use the optional deep 503 boxes or the Gewiss enclosure. The Wago 221 connectors make the joints. Label each module with the name of its circuit, so they do not get mixed up in Home Assistant.
Z-Wave pairing. In Home Assistant you enable the Z-Wave integration with the dongle, then add one module at a time, starting with the nearest, using secure inclusion and the code printed on the module. Rename each energy sensor and add it to the energy dashboard as an individual consumer.
Recommended automations. Notification when the sum of the circuits comes close to the meter's rating, so you can switch something off before it trips. Notification when the washing machine has finished, recognised from the drop in power. Weekly summary of consumption per circuit, useful for seeing where to act.
Contents verified. The four Shelly Wave PM Mini modules are Z-Wave and pair with Home Assistant Green through the Sonoff Z-Wave 800 Plus dongle. Wago 221 connectors for wiring the modules are included. Optional: deep 503 boxes if a module will not fit behind the switch, and the Gewiss junction box to mount the modules there instead.

Before you order

Do you need a hub?

Yes, and it is included: Home Assistant Green is the controller and the Sonoff Z-Wave 800 Plus dongle provides the Z-Wave radio. A router with a free network port is needed to connect the Green.

Can I meter the main incomer of the house?

The PM Mini goes in series with the circuit and the current passes through the module, so it suits circuits within the maximum current the manufacturer states. For the main incomer or for the PV, you need a meter with current clamps: get in touch through our contact page.

Do you need an electrician?

Yes. The modules wire in series with the 230V circuits: the work must be done by qualified personnel with the installation isolated, checking the rating of each circuit and the manufacturer's diagram.

Does it work with Alexa, Google and Apple?

Home Assistant connects to Alexa and Google Assistant through the Home Assistant Cloud subscription service, or with a manual setup. For Apple Home you use Home Assistant's HomeKit Bridge integration, which works on the local network. The automations stay on Home Assistant either way.

What happens if there is no internet?

Z-Wave and Home Assistant work on the local network: automations, control from the dashboard at home and the inputs all keep working. Without internet there is no access from away and the voice assistants that go through the cloud stop, until the connection is back.

Does the data stay in the house?

Yes: with Z-Wave and Home Assistant the readings go from the radio to the Green and are stored locally, with no manufacturer cloud account. Access from outside the house is set up separately, with Home Assistant Cloud or with remote access arranged by whoever installs it.

Can I add devices?

Yes: more Shelly Wave modules can be added to the same Z-Wave network, for measurement, lights or roller shutters, and Home Assistant also accepts devices on other protocols. Every mains-powered module strengthens the Z-Wave network.

What if a product is out of stock on Amazon?

Get in touch through the contact page quoting the kit code: we will point you to an alternative that works with the rest of the set, so you do not have to hunt for an equivalent model yourself and risk buying a part that will not talk to the other devices in the kit.

Why buy on Amazon?

Purchase, delivery, returns and warranty are handled by Amazon: delivery times, returns and warranty are shown on Amazon when you buy. The kit is our own work: we picked parts that work together, plus the accessories you actually need to fit it.
