Z-Wave roller shutter kit with Shelly Wave Shutter on Home Assistant, 4 windows

Four Shelly Wave Shutter units drive the roller shutters on four windows over a Z-Wave network, separate from the home Wi-Fi, and Home Assistant Green with the Connect ZWA-2 adapter acts as the local controller. The wall push-buttons stay the main control; on top of that come schedules, scenes and app control, even without internet.

InstallationBy an electrician, behind the push-buttons or in a junction box, with the power off.

What it does

  • Each Shelly Wave Shutter drives one roller shutter motor: up, down and, once calibrated, a position as a percentage.
  • The existing wall buttons wire to the module inputs and carry on controlling the roller shutter.
  • Home Assistant Green with the Connect ZWA-2 runs the Z-Wave network locally, with no cloud.
  • Mains-powered modules repeat the Z-Wave signal and make the network more stable with every module you add.
  • In the Home Assistant app you set schedules, scenes such as "all down" and opening tied to sunrise and sunset.
More windows, awnings or lights to add to the same Z-Wave network? Get in touch from the contact page and we will suggest the right configuration.
Z-Wave roller shutter kit (4 windows): installation diagram
1Home Assistant Green next to the router, on a network cable: the home's local controller.
2Home Assistant Connect ZWA-2 adapter plugged into Home Assistant Green, clear of obstructions and raised: the Z-Wave radio.
3Shelly Wave Shutter behind the roller shutter push-button or in the junction box. Four in the kit.

How it is installed

Control unit and radio receiver. Home Assistant Green connects to the router with a network cable and runs off its own power supply. The Connect ZWA-2 adapter is connected to the Green as the manufacturer instructs and goes somewhere clear and high up, away from the router and from metal, ideally central to the windows. First start-up is done from the browser.
Roller-shutter modules. The electrician isolates the supply and wires each Shelly Wave Shutter to the roller shutter motor, to line, neutral and the up and down push-buttons, following the manufacturer's diagram. Work on 230V must be carried out by qualified personnel with the power off, checking that a neutral is present in every back box.
Boxes and connections. The module goes behind the roller-shutter push-button; if it will not fit, use the optional deep 503 boxes or the Gewiss junction box. The Wago 221 keep the joints tidy. Label each module with the name of its window before you close up.
Z-Wave pairing. In Home Assistant you enable the Z-Wave integration with the Connect ZWA-2, then add one module at a time, starting with the one nearest the controller, using secure inclusion and the code printed on the module. Calibrate the travel of each roller shutter, so the percentage position is accurate.
Recommended automations. Roller shutters down at sunset and up in the morning on weekdays, later at the weekend. In summer, shutters halfway on the sun-facing windows through the hot hours. An “all down” button on the dashboard. With more sensors you can add scenarios tied to wind, temperature or the alarm later on.
Contents verified. The four Shelly Wave Shutter modules are Z-Wave and pair with Home Assistant Green through the Connect ZWA-2 adapter, which provides the Z-Wave radio. The Wago 221 connectors for the modules' connections are included. Optional: deep 503 boxes if the module will not fit behind the switch insert, and a Gewiss junction box to mount the modules there instead.

Before you order

Do you need a hub?

Yes, and it is included: Home Assistant Green is the controller and the Connect ZWA-2 provides the Z-Wave radio. Without them the Wave modules cannot be controlled from an app. A router with a free network port is needed to connect the Green.

Why Z-Wave and not Wi-Fi?

Z-Wave is a radio network dedicated to home devices, separate from the Wi-Fi: it puts no load on the router and does not depend on its coverage. Mains-powered modules repeat the signal, and with Home Assistant everything works locally.

Do you need an electrician?

Yes. The modules wire to the roller-shutter motors and to the 230V push-buttons: the work must be done by qualified personnel with the installation isolated, checking for a neutral in the boxes and following the manufacturer's wiring diagram.

Does it work with Alexa, Google and Apple?

Home Assistant connects to Alexa and Google Assistant through the Home Assistant Cloud subscription service, or with a manual setup. For Apple Home you use Home Assistant's HomeKit Bridge integration, which works on the local network. The automations stay on Home Assistant either way.

What happens if there is no internet?

Z-Wave and Home Assistant work on the local network: automations, control from the dashboard at home and the inputs all keep working. Without internet there is no access from away and the voice assistants that go through the cloud stop, until the connection is back.

Do you need to know how to use Home Assistant?

Not for basic use: the initial setup is guided and the Z-Wave integration is switched on from a menu. More involved automations take some practice. If you would rather have help with the setup, get in touch from the contact page.

Can I add devices?

Yes: more Shelly Wave modules for roller shutters, lights or energy measurement can be added to the same Z-Wave network, and Home Assistant also accepts devices on other protocols. Every mains-powered module strengthens the Z-Wave network.

What if a product is out of stock on Amazon?

Get in touch through the contact page quoting the kit code: we will point you to an alternative that works with the rest of the set, so you do not have to hunt for an equivalent model yourself and risk buying a part that will not talk to the other devices in the kit.

Why buy on Amazon?

Purchase, delivery, returns and warranty are handled by Amazon: delivery times, returns and warranty are shown on Amazon when you buy. The kit is our own work: we picked parts that work together, plus the accessories you actually need to fit it.
