The main distinction is between a pure inverter and an inverter/charger: the first only converts from battery to 230V, the second adds a charger and automatic transfer to the mains, so it is what you need where there is a grid connection or a generator.

Sizing starts from the peaks: a compressor or a pump asks for two or three times its rated power on start-up.
