For anyone on a 3 to 6kW supply who wants to charge the electric car at home without tripping the limiter. What it does
- The wallbox charges the car with a current adjustable from 6 to 16A: you pick the value to suit the meter's power rating.
- The Shelly EM, with the 50A clamp on the incoming conductor from the meter, measures in real time the power the whole house draws.
- By comparing household consumption with the available power, charging is reduced or paused when the oven, the washing machine or the air conditioner starts, according to the functions the wallbox provides.
- Charging can be scheduled for the hours when the home uses least, at night for example.
- The Shelly EM history shows how much energy the house uses and how much of it goes to the car.

How to install it
Wi-Fi network and position. The wallbox and the Shelly EM connect to the home Wi-Fi, with no hub. Before deciding where to mount the wallbox it is worth checking that the signal reaches the garage or the parking space; if it is weak, add a repeater. The wallbox goes on the wall, close to where you park, at the height the manufacturer specifies.
Wallbox. The wallbox needs a dedicated circuit from the consumer unit with the protective devices required by the standards and by the manufacturer, sized for the maximum current set. On a single-phase supply you set a limit that suits the meter's power rating. The 230V connections must be made by qualified personnel with the system isolated. The circuit, the protective devices and the cable installation are not included in the kit.
Shelly EM and accessories. The Shelly EM goes on DIN rail in the 4-module enclosure supplied, next to the meter or the main board; the 50A clamp closes around the live conductor coming from the meter, facing the direction indicated. The crimp ferrules are for flexible conductors in the terminals, the Wago lever connectors for the joints inside the enclosure.
App and setup. The Shelly EM is added to the Shelly app and you check that the power reading is positive with loads running: if it is negative, the clamp is the wrong way round. The wallbox is configured in its own app as the manufacturer indicates: maximum current, schedules and, if the wallbox supports it, the link to the Shelly EM reading.
Recommended rules. Start with a low charging current, for example 6-10A on a 3kW supply, and raise it while checking the household peaks in the history. A notification from the Shelly app when household consumption gets close to the supply limit is useful too, along with charging scheduled for the night hours.
Contents verified. The TopAC wallbox and the Shelly EM are managed over Wi-Fi and the meter works with the 50A clamp supplied. Also included are the 4-module surface-mount consumer unit, for the 2 DIN modules plus a spare way, the crimp ferrules for wiring inside the board and the Wago lever connectors for the joints.

Before you order
Do you need a hub?
No: the wallbox and the Shelly EM connect straight to the home Wi-Fi. Good Wi-Fi coverage is needed both at the consumer unit and in the garage or parking space where the wallbox goes.
Does it work with Alexa and Google Home?
The Shelly EM connects to Alexa and Google Home through the Shelly integration, but with a meter it is the app that really matters. The wallbox is managed with its own app and with the integrations the manufacturer lists; if in doubt, write to us from the contact page.
Do you need an electrician?
Yes: the wallbox needs a dedicated circuit with the required protective devices, and the Shelly EM has to be fitted in the consumer unit. The 230V connections must be made by qualified personnel with the system isolated. The electrician also checks the cable cross-section and the maximum current to set.
Can I charge with a 3kW supply?
Yes, by setting a low current: at 6A the car draws about 1.4kW and leaves headroom for the house. Charging is slower, but overnight it is often enough. The Shelly EM history helps you work out which current to use without tripping the limiter.
What happens if the internet goes down?
The wallbox keeps charging with the settings it has saved and the Shelly EM keeps measuring. Control from outside the home, notifications and the history update in the cloud resume once the connection is back.
Can I add solar later?
Yes: the Shelly EM has two measuring channels, so with a second clamp you can also measure the solar system's production. Using the surplus for charging requires the functions the wallbox provides: write to us from the contacts section and we will check the configuration.
Are there batteries?
No: the wallbox and the Shelly EM are mains-powered. There are no batteries to replace and no routine maintenance on the meter beyond the firmware updates from the app. The wallbox follows the manufacturer's maintenance instructions.
What if a product is out of stock on Amazon?
