A microinverter converts to AC right under the panel: every module works at its own maximum power point, so partial shade on one does not drag the others down the way it does on a string inverter. And there is no dangerous DC voltage left on the roof.

The choice is made by comparing the power of the module with the microinverter's rated input, accepting a slight oversizing of the panel, and by checking the number of inputs: the 4-in-1 models serve four panels from a single unit.
