A shunt is the only way to really know the state of charge of a lithium battery: the resting voltage of a LiFePO4 pack stays almost flat between 20% and 90%, so the current going in and out has to be counted. From that the system derives remaining Ah, estimated autonomy and cycle history.

What matters in the choice is the number of channels, the shunt current and the protocols available, from NMEA 2000 to Modbus.
