What it does
- Four temperature and humidity sensors, fixed at bud height at the coldest points of the plot, send a reading every 10 minutes; on nights at risk the interval can be shortened to 1 minute.
- With the temperature and humidity of each point you can work out the dew point and the wet-bulb temperature, the two figures that decide when to start the frost protection irrigation.
- When the threshold that has been set is crossed, the notification arrives on your smartphone, with the measuring point that triggered it.
- The controller in the panel of the pump closes a start contact: by hand from the app or automatically at the threshold. The second output stays available for the fans or for a second pump.
- A digital input reads the auxiliary pump-running contact: the app shows whether the system started and when it stopped.
- The solar gateway with a 4G modem works at the edge of the field without power and without a data line.
- History and charts of every frost night remain available from a smartphone and from a PC, point by point.

How it is installed
Gateway. On a pole with a diameter between 67 and 127 mm, with metal straps, at the edge of the field at the point with the best view over the rows. Solar panel in full sun, with a bracket that tilts to 15°, 45° or 75°. Antenna vertical, above the top of the pole and at least 35 cm from walls and structures. Nano-format SIM in the watertight door, to be closed fully again. It switches on by itself when the cable of the panel is connected. IP67, operation from -30 to +70 °C.
Temperature and humidity sensors. With a strap on a support pole or on a wooden stake, at the height of the buds or of the shoots, away from metal masses. They go where the cold collects: valley bottoms, hollows, the low edge against hedges and walls; it is best to keep one in an intermediate area, as a reference. Out of the spray of the frost protection sprinklers: ice on the sensor falsifies the reading. IP67, range from -30 to +70 °C, accuracy ±0.3 °C above zero and ±0.6 °C below zero.
Controller in the pump panel. On a DIN rail inside a watertight box next to the panel, because the controller is IP30 and works from -20 to +60 °C. Power supply from 5 to 24 V direct current, with a DIN-rail power supply. Antenna vertical, outside metal cabinets.
Start and status connections. The two outputs of the controller are 3 A changeover relays: through an interface relay they close the remote start input of the panel of the pump or of the fans. The auxiliary contact of the contactor, a clean contact, goes to one of the four digital inputs and gives the confirmation that it is running. The panel must have a contact start input; the manual selector always stays active. A job for an electrician.
Configuration. Sensors via NFC with a smartphone and the free app of the manufacturer: reading interval and names of the points. The gateway is configured from a browser through its service Wi-Fi. The controller is set from a PC with a USB-C cable and the free software of the manufacturer. Thresholds, recipients of the notifications and the start rule are set on the portal.
Documentation included. Written installation guide with the choice of the measuring points, the wiring diagram of the controller to the panel of the pump and the switch-on sequence, and initial configuration of thresholds and notifications based on the crop and the phenological stage indicated when ordering.

Before you order
Are power or internet needed in the field?
For sensors and gateway, no. The gateway is powered by its solar panel and has a built-in 4G modem: it requires a nano-format data SIM (not included, any operator, less than 1 GB of traffic per month). The sensors are battery powered. Only the controller needs a direct voltage between 5 and 24 V, which is taken at the panel of the pump. If power and the farm network already reach the panel, the version with an outdoor gateway powered from the network cable (PoE) is available, at a lower cost. It is chosen when ordering.
Does one gateway cover the whole plot?
In open country the sensors reach the gateway at a few kilometres: a plot of 10 hectares on the flat or on a slight slope is covered by a single gateway. Rises, opposite slopes and tall rows with hail nets reduce the range: the gateway goes at the highest and most open point, not at the bottom of the hollow where the sensors are. For distant farm units a second gateway is added.
Which frost protection systems can I control?
Those that start with a contact: panels of electric pumps with a remote start input, motor pumps with an automatic starting panel, fans with an external enable. The outputs are 3 A relays and work through an interface relay, not on the load. If the pump only starts by hand, the kit raises the alarm but cannot make it start. Pumps, fans, sprinklers and panels are not included: the kit controls the system you already have.
Can I rely on the automatic start?
It is an aid, not a substitute for keeping watch on critical nights. The threshold rule resides on the portal: the reading goes from the sensor to the gateway, from the gateway to the cloud via 4G, and the command comes back to the controller. If the mobile network goes down, notifications and commands do not arrive. That is why the manual selector of the panel stays active, the confirmation that the pump is running is always visible in the app and it is best to set the alarm threshold with a margin above the start threshold.
How often do the sensors read and with what accuracy?
The interval is 10 minutes and it can be brought down to 1 minute from the app: on frost nights it is shortened, then brought back to the normal value so as not to drain the battery. The declared accuracy is ±0.3 °C between 0 and 70 °C and ±0.6 °C below zero; the humidity ±3 %. The sensor has no solar shield: during the day, in the sun, it reads more than the air; at night, when it matters, it measures what the bud feels.
I have several plots or I need more points
The kit is configured on the farm: every extra point is a sensor, gateway and platform stay the same. Among the options of the product you will find the size with 8 measuring points. Battery life of the sensors and of the gateway
The sensors have a replaceable lithium battery, with a declared life of more than 10 years with one reading every 10 minutes in good radio conditions, about 6 years at the edge of the coverage; shorter intervals reduce it. The charge level is visible in the app. The gateway has an internal battery that keeps it on for up to 4 days without sun.
Where is the data consulted and are there any fees?
On the app and on the portal of the manufacturer, from smartphone and PC, with charts, thresholds and notifications; no fee for basic use. Where there is a farming platform or the system of the crop protection consortium, the gateway can also send the data to that system (MQTT or HTTP): the configuration is included.
Is an electrician needed?
For gateway and sensors, no: they are mounted with straps and clamps, without cables. The controller has to be connected to the panel of the pump by an electrician: low-voltage supply, interface relay on the start input, auxiliary contact for the confirmation that it is running. Gateway and sensors are IP67, for permanent outdoor installation; the controller is IP30 and goes in a watertight box.
