Customisable kits. This is one of the Milesight LoRaWAN kits in the Smart Home section. For different installations, custom kits or bespoke automation, write to us from the contacts section.
Several sizes. The figures, diagram and table on this page describe the «16 machines» size. The other sizes are selected at the top and are listed further down, under «Available sizes».
16 machinesOne split-core clamp per machine, up to 250 A, closed on one phase without disconnecting anything.
16 digital inputsFour controllers with 4 inputs each for end-of-cycle, alarm or open-guard contacts.
Running, idle, stoppedThe states are derived from the current thresholds, set machine by machine.
ConsumptionCurrent and ampere-hours per machine; energy estimated with the voltage and cosφ you set.

What it does

  • The current clamp closes around one phase of the machine's supply line and transmits the current drawn at regular intervals, from one minute upwards.
  • The current draw distinguishes the states: below the first threshold the machine is stopped, between the two thresholds it is switched on and idle, above it is working. The thresholds are set for each machine after a few days of measurements.
  • The controllers read up to 16 contacts: end of cycle, machine in alarm, guard open, material request. With one contact at every cycle you obtain the piece count.
  • For each machine the hours of running, idle and stop, the number of cycles and the trend of the current draw are recorded: these are the basic data for calculating availability and OEE.
  • Consumption is estimated from the measured current, with the voltage and the power factor that you set: it serves to allocate costs between machines and jobs, it does not replace a meter.
  • A current draw that grows over time for the same machining operation indicates worn tools, friction or a motor to be checked.
  • The data can be consulted from PC and from smartphone and can be sent to the MES or to the ERP.
For a different number of machines, machines with lines above 250 A or with large-diameter cables, more digital inputs, more buildings, if the workshop has no internet connection and a 4G gateway is needed: tell us the characteristics of your department from the contacts section and we will propose the right configuration together with the quotation.
Machine status and consumption kit 16 machines Litio Store: installation diagram in the workshop
1Industrial DIN-rail LoRaWAN gateway, in a panel in a central position, with the magnetic-base antenna brought outside the panel and connected to the company network.
2Split-core current meter, in the panel of each machine, closed on a single phase of the supply line. Sixteen in the kit.
3Controller with 4 digital inputs on DIN rail, in a panel near a group of machines: it reads the end-of-cycle and alarm contacts. Four in the kit.

How it is installed

Gateway. On a 35 mm DIN rail in a panel in a central position with respect to the machines, or on the wall. Powered via PoE from the network cable or via USB-C 5 V with the power adapter provided; it has no terminals for 24 V. The magnetic-base antenna goes outside the metal panel, vertical on a metal surface, high up and away from walls and obstacles. IP30, operating from -20 to +60 °C. Connection to the company network with an Ethernet cable or Wi-Fi.
Current clamps. In the machine's panel, on the supply line downstream of the main isolator: you open the clamp, close it around a single phase conductor until it clicks and secure it with a cable tie. Never phase and neutral together, never around a whole multicore cable. Conductors up to 16 mm in diameter fit through. Nothing is disconnected and nothing is cut. The clamp is powered by the current it measures, from 3 A upwards.
Input controllers. On a DIN rail in a panel near the group of machines it serves, one for every four signals. Powered from 5 to 24 V DC at the terminals. Each input, opto-isolated, accepts a dry contact or a signal from 3 to 24 V DC; where the machine only provides a voltage signal, an interface relay is inserted. Two-wire shielded signal cable. The antenna goes vertical; if the panel is metal and closed, it is best to bring it outside.
Coverage test and thresholds. Before closing the panels again, check on the gateway that every clamp and every controller is transmitting. The machines are left working for a few days and from the current charts the values for stopped, idle and running are read, from which the thresholds are set. Each device receives the label with the name of its machine.
Configuration. Clamps and controllers are configured from a PC with a USB-C cable and the manufacturer's free software: transmission interval, voltage and cosφ for the energy calculation, operating mode of the inputs. These devices have no NFC. The gateway is configured from a browser. It is best to configure everything on the bench, before mounting in the panels.
Documentation included. Written installation guide with the position of the clamps in the machine panel, wiring diagram of the digital inputs with and without interface relay, position of the antenna and switch-on sequence, and initial configuration of intervals and calculation parameters based on the list of machines indicated when ordering.

4 Controller with 4 digital inputs and 2 relay outputs, DIN rail It reads the end-of-cycle, alarm and guard contacts; 16 inputs in total.

Milesight devices of the highest quality with the manufacturer's warranty. No batteries to replace: the clamps are powered by the conductor they measure, the controllers by low-voltage DC with their own power supply, the gateway from the mains via PoE or USB-C.

Available sizes

The size is chosen at the top, together with version and connectivity. The diagram, the photo and the table above show the «16 machines» size; with the other sizes only the quantities of the devices listed below change, the rest of the kit is identical.

  • 8 machines: 8 current clamp meters, 2 controllers with inputs and relays
  • 16 machines: 16 current clamp meters, 4 controllers with inputs and relays
  • 32 machines: 32 current clamp meters, 8 controllers with inputs and relays

In the complete kit the installation material linked to these devices (brackets, boxes, clips, cables, enclosures) follows the size chosen. For a different size write to us from the contacts section.

Available connectivity options

  • Customer network (Ethernet/Wi-Fi): 1 DIN-rail LoRaWAN gateway
  • Built-in 4G: 1 DIN-rail LoRaWAN gateway with 4G. SIM not included; independent of the company network

In the complete kit the material for the gateway changes accordingly as well (network cable, pole, PoE injector). The SIM for the 4G versions is not included.

Before you order

Is an internet connection needed in the workshop?

It is needed at the point where the gateway is installed: a socket of the company network or the Wi-Fi coverage. Clamps and controllers do not use Wi-Fi, they talk by radio with the gateway. If there is no network in the department, or if you do not want to connect the system to the company network, the version with a 4G gateway is available, which requires a data SIM (not included, any operator, traffic below 1 GB per month). It is chosen when ordering.

Do the PLC or the machine software have to be touched?

No. The clamp closes around a conductor and has no electrical connection with the machine. The digital inputs read a dry contact that is already available, for example an auxiliary contact, the end-of-cycle lamp or the alarm relay, without modifying the program. It works in the same way on new machines, old machines and machines of different makes.

On which machines can the clamp be fitted?

On any machine supplied with alternating current at 50-60 Hz with a draw of up to 250 A and phase conductors up to 16 mm in diameter. The clamp goes on the machine's supply line, not on the output of an inverter. It is powered by the current it measures, from 3 A upwards; when the machine is switched off it keeps transmitting for about 12 hours, then it stops and starts again on its own when the machine is switched back on. For machines that draw less than 3 A while idle and for which you want to distinguish idle from stopped, the clamp is powered at 5 V from the USB-C port. For larger lines there are 500 and 1,000 A clamps: write to us from the contacts section.

How accurate are the status and the consumption?

The current is measured with an accuracy of ±1% above 5 A and transmitted at intervals from 1 minute upwards: the system sees shifts, stops, idle periods and changeovers well, not micro-stops of a few seconds. One clamp measures one phase: the machine's consumption is calculated assuming the three phases are balanced, with the voltage and the cosφ you set. It is an estimate suitable for allocating costs, not a legal-metrology measurement.

Does the signal get out of the panels and cover the whole building?

Metal panels attenuate the signal, which is why the gateway goes in a central position with the antenna outside the panel and high up. For this gateway the manufacturer declares up to 2 km in urban areas and 15 km in open field; inside a plant, walls, steelwork and overhead cranes count, and the check is made during installation before closing the panels again. For several buildings or distant departments a second gateway is added.

I have more or fewer than 16 machines

Among the product options you will find the 8-machine and 32-machine sizes. The kit is in any case configured on the department: one clamp per machine, one controller for every four signals, the gateway and the platform stay the same. For different numbers, machines of very different sizes or more inputs per machine, write to us from the contacts section with the list of machines and their rated currents: we will send you the composition and the quotation for the adapted kit.

Where is the data consulted and are there subscription fees?

On the manufacturer's app and portal, from smartphone and PC, with charts, thresholds and notifications; no fee for basic use. Where there is a MES, a data collection software or an ERP, the gateway can also send the data to that system (MQTT or HTTP): the configuration is included. The OEE calculation and the production dashboards are done in that software, starting from this data.

What happens if the internet is down?

The machines are not affected: the kit measures and controls nothing. Clamps and controllers keep transmitting to the gateway, but the data of the period without a line may not reach the platform; when it is restored the system resumes on its own. If the continuity of the history matters, the gateway should be connected to a reliable line.

Is an electrician needed?

Yes. The clamp does not require conductors to be disconnected, but it is fitted inside the machine's panel: the work must be done by personnel qualified for electrical work, with the panel isolated where possible. Controllers, power supplies and interface relays are also wired in the panel. For the plant's electrical maintenance technician it is a routine job.

Degree of protection and temperature

Gateway, clamps and controllers are IP30: they go inside the electrical panels, sheltered from dust, chips and oil mist. Operation from -20 to +70 °C for the clamps and from -20 to +60 °C for the gateway and the controllers.

What is not included
