The Jean Müller C3947 (model DS60VGPV-1000) is a surge protective device (SPD) of the combined Type 1+2 class, specific to the DC side of photovoltaic systems. It protects one MPPT with a three-pole Y structure, which discharges the three PV+ / PV− / PE paths to earth, and works up to 1000 V DC (Ucpv), with a withstand of up to 1200 V DC.

It is installed in the DC combiner box, as close as possible to the inverter's string input or near the photovoltaic generator, and it is the device to adopt when the building or the system is fitted with lightning protection or exposed to direct lightning strikes: the Type 1 component discharges a lightning current Iimp of 12.5 kA per pole, i.e. 25 kA in total with a 10/350 µs waveform, while the Type 2 function limits induced surges, with an Imax of 20 kA on an 8/20 µs wave. The VG technology combines varistors and a spark gap to achieve low residual protection levels with no permanent leakage current. A red mechanical indicator shows which module needs replacing and a changeover remote signalling contact makes it possible to report the alarm at a distance, an essential function in unattended installations.
