The data logger is what turns an installation into a measurable installation: it collects data from the inverters over RS485 or Modbus, stores it locally and sends it to the portal. On commercial plants it is often a contractual requirement, because it is the evidence that the expected yield is being met.

A pyranometer adds the measurement of actual irradiance, the only way to tell whether low output is down to the system or to the weather.
