The smart meter is what lets the inverter know what is happening at the utility meter: without it, the battery cannot charge from the sun instead of the grid and export cannot be held under the limit. The ACR10R-D16TE and ACR10R-D16TE4 read through clamp current transformers, so they go in without cutting the line cables.
They communicate over Modbus RS485, the standard every inverter understands, and mount on DIN rail in the board.
