Tamper-proof Home Assistant alarm kit with siren and UPS

A local alarm built on Home Assistant Green with the MG24 Zigbee dongle: Sonoff SNZB-04PR1 and SenseGuard tamper-protected contacts, two motion sensors, a Zigbee siren and an APC UPS that keeps the system running when the power fails. It all runs in the house, with no cloud, with an alarm panel and notifications in the Home Assistant app.

What it does

  • Home Assistant Green with the MG24 dongle is the controller: it takes in all the sensors over Zigbee and decides locally when to set the alarm off.
  • The four SNZB-04PR1 contacts and the two SenseGuard units on the doors and windows report an opening and also the sensor itself being removed or opened.
  • The two SNZB-03PR2 motion sensors cover the hallway and the living room.
  • On an alarm the SNZB-09P siren sounds and the Home Assistant app sends a notification to every phone in the family.
  • The APC UPS keeps Home Assistant and the router running during power cuts, so the alarm carries on working.
  • The Home Assistant alarm panel handles away, night and holiday modes, with a code, entry and exit delays and an event history.
For more openings, cameras to bring into Home Assistant or outdoor sirens, get in touch from the contact page and we will suggest the right configuration.

How it is installed

Control unit, network and UPS. The APC UPS goes next to the router: the router and Home Assistant Green plug into its protected outlets. Home Assistant connects to the router with the network cable and the MG24 dongle goes into the USB extension lead, to move it away from the box and the Wi-Fi. In Home Assistant you add the ZHA integration, or Zigbee2MQTT, with the dongle as coordinator.
Tamper-protected contacts. The contacts are fixed to the fixed frame of doors and windows, with the magnet on the opening leaf, lined up. The SNZB-04PR1 go on the most exposed openings, such as the front door and French windows, because they also report being taken off their mount. The SenseGuard cover the other two openings and run on AAA cells, as the manufacturer states.
Motion, siren and accessories. The motion sensors go in a corner, about two metres off the floor, facing the walkway. The siren goes somewhere central and out of sight, powered as the manufacturer specifies; if it needs the mains, it is worth putting it on the UPS too. The kit's USB extension lead is for the dongle; the optional pack of CR2477 cells is the spare for the SNZB-04PR1 units.
Pairing. In Home Assistant you pair every device, starting with those closest to the dongle, and assign them to areas of the house. Test each contact, including taking the cover off to check the tamper switch, walk in front of the motion sensors and sound the siren. Add the UPS integration to get the power-cut warning.
Recommended automations. Alarm panel with away, night and holiday modes, protected by a code, with an entry delay on the main door. Immediate alarm for any tampering, even with the alarm switched off. Notification when the power fails and when it comes back. Automatic arming when all the phones are away from home, with a confirmation notification.
Contents verified. The MG24 dongle is a Zigbee coordinator supported by Home Assistant, and the Sonoff contacts, motion sensors and siren join its network. The APC UPS keeps the controller and the router running during power cuts. The kit has the USB extension lead to move the dongle away from Home Assistant and the Wi-Fi and, as an option, spare CR2477 cells for the four tamper-protected contacts.

Before you order

Do you need a hub?

Yes: Home Assistant Green with the MG24 Zigbee dongle acts as the alarm controller, and both are included. No other hub is needed, and no subscription for the alarm and notification functions.

Does it work with Alexa, Google and Apple?

Yes, through Home Assistant. With Apple Home you use the HomeKit Bridge integration, built in and free, which can expose the alarm panel as well. For Alexa and Google Home you go through the Home Assistant Cloud subscription or set it up by hand.

Do you need an electrician?

No: the sensors are battery-powered and fix with the adhesive, Home Assistant, dongle and UPS plug into sockets. It is an advanced DIY kit because of the Home Assistant setup, not because of the installation.

What happens in a power cut or an internet outage?

With no mains power the UPS keeps Home Assistant and the router running for a time that depends on the load connected. With no internet the alarm keeps working locally and the siren sounds; only the notifications on your phone and access from outside are missing, until the line comes back.

Are batteries included?

The SNZB-04PR1 contacts run on a CR2477 battery and the SenseGuard on AAA cells, as the manufacturer states; the kit holds an optional pack of spare CR2477. Home Assistant shows the charge level of every sensor.

Can I add more sensors?

Yes: more contacts and motion, smoke or flood sensors can be added to the Zigbee network, and in Home Assistant you can bring in cameras, lights and locks from many brands to use in the alarm scenes.

Is it a certified alarm?

No: it is a DIY home alarm system, with a siren and notifications on your phone, with no link to a monitoring centre. It is fine for knowing straight away what is happening at home and discouraging a break-in; if your insurer requires a certified system, you need a security installer.

What if a product is out of stock on Amazon?

Get in touch through the contact page quoting the kit code: we will point you to an alternative that works with the other parts, so the kit still performs as described. Do not swap a component for a similar model without first checking the protocol and whether it is compatible with the rest of the installation.

Why buy on Amazon?

Purchase, delivery, returns and warranty are handled by Amazon, under the terms you see when you order. The kit is our own work: the parts are chosen to work together and the basket adds them all, in the right quantities, in one go.
