Shelly temperature alarm kit for panels and machinery, 3 probes

For predictive maintenance on distribution boards, motors and tanks. The Shelly 1 Gen3 with Add-On reads three DS18B20 temperature probes with a 3 m cable and alerts your phone when one point heats up past the threshold. The relay can switch on a fan or give an alarm signal. You use the Shelly app, over Wi-Fi.

What it does

  • The three DS18B20 probes read the temperature at three different points, inside a board, on a motor casing and on a tank for example.
  • The Add-On connects the probes to the Shelly 1 Gen3, which sends the readings to the app over Wi-Fi.
  • When a temperature goes above the threshold set you get a notification, before overheating turns into a breakdown.
  • The Shelly 1 Gen3 relay can start a cooling fan for the board or a warning device when the temperature rises.
  • The history shows the trend over time: a motor running a little hotter every day is one to get checked.
For more measuring points, longer probes or sending the data to a supervisory system, get in touch from the contact page: we will suggest the right configuration.

How it is installed

Wi-Fi network. The Shelly 1 Gen3 uses Wi-Fi: 2.4GHz coverage is needed at the installation point, to be checked with your phone. Inside a closed metal enclosure the signal can be weak: it is better to fit the module in a box outside the enclosure, with the probes running into it. The probes have a 3 m lead, so the measuring points have to be within that distance.
Module and Add-On. The Add-On plugs onto the Shelly 1 Gen3 connector before the unit is powered up, following the manufacturer's instructions. The module runs on 230V and its relay can drive a fan or a sounder. Work on 230V must be carried out by qualified personnel with the power off; for loads above the relay rating, use a contactor.
Probes and wiring. The three DS18B20 probes are wired in parallel to the Add-On terminals, following the Shelly diagram. The metal tip is fixed in contact with the surface to be measured, with a cable tie or heat-resistant tape, or left in the air inside the board. The joints are made with the Wago 221-413 connectors; the module goes in a deep 503 box or in the Gewiss junction box.
App and setup. In the Shelly app, add the Shelly 1 Gen3 to the network and enable the Add-On in the settings: the three probes appear as separate sensors. Warm one probe with your hand to see which it is, then rename them after the point they measure. Check that the readings with the machine stopped are close to each other.
Recommended automations. Set an alert threshold for each probe, based on the normal operating temperature at that point as stated by the machine's maker. Create an action that starts the board's fan above a threshold and stops it when the temperature falls. Add a notification to the maintenance engineer and look at the weekly history for trends.
Contents verified. The Shelly 1 Gen3 works with the Shelly Add-On, which takes several DS18B20 probes on the same input: the kit's three probes are read separately in the same Shelly app. The kit includes the Wago 221-413 connectors for the module's connections, the optional deep 503 boxes and the Gewiss junction box as an alternative, for housing the module near the points to be monitored.

Before you order

Do you need a hub?

No: the Shelly 1 Gen3 connects straight to the Wi-Fi and is managed with the Shelly app. All you need is Wi-Fi coverage where the module is installed, preferably not inside a closed metal enclosure.

What temperatures can it measure?

The DS18B20 probes are suited to the surfaces of boards, motors, pipework and tanks, and to the air inside a board, within the limits the manufacturer gives on the Amazon listing. They must not be used in contact with live parts or on very hot surfaces such as flues or ovens.

Do you need an electrician?

Yes. The module wires into 230V and its relay can drive a fan or an alarm: the connections must be made by qualified personnel, with the installation isolated, following the manufacturer's diagram. The probes are fixed with cable ties, with no electrical work.

Does it work with Alexa, Google Home or other systems?

The devices run from the Shelly app, which also offers integration with Alexa and Google Home as the manufacturer describes. On business sites, Shelly devices can also send data to supervisory systems on the local network: ask your own engineer or get in touch via the contact page.

What happens if there is no internet?

Actions set on the device, such as switching a fan on above a threshold, can work locally. Without the line you get no notifications on your phone and cannot see the readings remotely until the connection is back.

Can I add more probes?

The Add-On takes more than one DS18B20 probe on the same input, up to the number the manufacturer states, wired in parallel like the first three. For distant points or a lot of machines a second module is the better answer: get in touch through the contact page.

What if a product is out of stock on Amazon?

An item can sell out or change version. Get in touch through the contact page quoting the kit code: we will point you to an alternative that works with the other devices and with the same app, so you keep a combination we have checked and you do not have to go back over anything yourself.

Why buy on Amazon?

Purchase, payment, delivery, returns and warranty are handled by Amazon, as with any other order: delivery times, returns and warranty are shown on Amazon when you buy. The kit is our own work: we picked parts that work together, plus the accessories needed to fit them.
