The two-channel Shelly EM reads solar production and the exchange with the grid; when there is surplus, a 16A Shelly 1PM Gen3 switches the electric water heater on and off again as the sun fades. The hot water is made with energy that would otherwise go to the grid. All over Wi-Fi in the Shelly app.
What it does
- One clamp on the main switch measures the exchange with the grid, the other on the inverter output measures production.
- When export goes above the threshold you set, that is the water heater's power plus a margin, the Shelly 1PM Gen3 switches it on.
- If the surplus drops, because of cloud or because another appliance has come on, the relay switches the water heater off after the delay you set.
- The water heater's own thermostat stays active: once the temperature is reached it stops heating, even with the relay switched on.
- A backup schedule can switch the water heater on at a fixed time on days without sun.
- The app shows how much energy the water heater has taken and how much has gone to the grid.

Before you order
Do you need a hub?
No. The Shelly devices in the kit connect straight to the home Wi-Fi router and are managed from the Shelly app, on a smartphone or in a browser. Good Wi-Fi coverage is needed at the consumer unit: metal enclosures and cellars weaken it.
Does it work with Alexa, Google or Apple?
The kit is managed from the Shelly app, with charts and consumption history. Through Shelly's integrations the devices can be brought into Alexa and Google Home, for example to switch off a load by voice. Readings and energy-based automations are best kept in the Shelly app.
Do you need an electrician?
Yes. The devices mount in the distribution board or in a small enclosure next to it and connect to the 230V line: the work must be done by qualified personnel with the system switched off. The kit gives the installer the enclosure, ferrules and connectors needed for tidy wiring.
What happens if the internet goes down?
Metering carries on and the devices stay reachable from the app on the home network. Scenes handled in the cloud may not run without internet: to avoid depending on the line it is better to configure the logic locally on the devices, as stated by the manufacturer. The water heater can still be switched on from the app button on the local network.
Do I need to buy any batteries?
No. Every device in the kit runs off mains power and uses no batteries. So there are no spares to keep at home and no charge levels to check: if the power goes off, the devices stop and start again on their own when it comes back.
Could the water heater run out of hot water?
Not if you set up the backup schedule: on days without sun the Shelly 1PM Gen3 switches the water heater on at the time you pick. The water heater's own thermostat keeps controlling the temperature and its safety devices stay active.
Does it suit every water heater?
For single-phase electric water heaters whose power stays within the relay's 16A, as most domestic models do. Heavier water heaters need a contactor driven by the relay; the electrician decides. Heat pumps for domestic hot water have to be checked case by case.
What if a product is out of stock on Amazon?
It happens, especially with multipacks and newly released products. Write to us from the contacts section with the kit code and the product you can't find: we'll point you to an alternative that fits the rest of the kit, so it keeps working as described.
Why buy on Amazon?
We put the kit together and tested it ourselves, picking the parts and checking that they work together. Purchase, payment, returns and warranty are handled by Amazon: delivery times, returns and warranty are shown on Amazon at the time of purchase, item by item.
