Shelly communal gate kit with 4 BLU remotes and app

For blocks of flats that want to replace the old gate remotes. The Shelly 1 Gen3 on the gate control unit gives the opening pulse, four Shelly BLU Button Tough buttons are used as key fobs and anyone with access to the app can open it from their phone too. Buttons are added or disabled in the app, with no codes to copy over.

What it does

  • The Shelly 1 Gen3 closes its contact for an instant on the gate control unit's command input, just like the push-button or the radio receiver.
  • The four Shelly BLU Button Tough buttons, tough and keyring-sized, send the command over Bluetooth to the Shelly 1 Gen3 when you are near the gate.
  • If a key fob is lost, it is removed in the app and no longer opens anything, with no need to change the others.
  • Anyone with access to the Shelly app can open the gate remotely too, to let in a courier or an engineer.
  • The gate's safety devices, such as the photocells and the beacon, stay with the control unit as before.
For more remote controls, a second gate or the pedestrian gate, get in touch from the contact page: we will tell you which configuration works with your control unit.

How it is installed

Network and range. The Shelly 1 Gen3 uses Wi-Fi: 2.4GHz coverage is needed near the gate control unit, to be checked with your phone, from a router or a repeater in the common areas for example. The BLU buttons communicate over Bluetooth and work within a few tens of metres, less with obstacles in the way: try the range from the point where you stop the car.
Module on the control unit. The Shelly 1 Gen3 runs on 230V and takes its dry contact to the terminals of the control unit's command input, in parallel with the existing receiver or push-button, following the unit's and the manufacturer's diagram. The connections are to be made by qualified personnel, with the supply isolated. The photocells and the safety devices stay wired and active.
Box and accessories. The module goes in a deep 503 box or, better, in the Gewiss junction box included, next to the control unit and out of the wet. The joints are made with Wago 221-413 connectors. The optional spare CR2032 cells in the kit are there to replace the ones in the buttons when they run down.
App and pairing. In the Shelly app, add the Shelly 1 Gen3 to the network and set it to switch off automatically after about a second, so the contact gives a pulse. Pair the four BLU buttons with the module and rename them after the person they are given to. Test each one at the gate and check that it opens on the first press.
Recommended automations. Set every button to open on a single press. If the control unit allows it, you can use a long press for the pedestrian command with a second module. Share app access only with the managing agent and the people responsible. Keep a record of who holds each button, so it can be disabled if one is lost.
Contents verified. The Shelly 1 Gen3 has a built-in Bluetooth bridge for Shelly BLU devices, so it picks up the four BLU Button Tough buttons directly; everything is managed in the Shelly app. The kit includes the Wago 221-413 connectors for the module's connections, the optional deep 503 boxes, the Gewiss junction box as an alternative for housing the module next to the control unit and, as an optional item, spare CR2032 cells for the buttons.

Before you order

Do you need a hub?

No: the BLU buttons talk over Bluetooth to the Shelly 1 Gen3, which acts as receiver. Wi-Fi near the gate is there for the app and for opening remotely; the buttons work with the module directly.

Is it compatible with our control panel?

The Shelly 1 Gen3 closes a dry contact, like a push-button: it works with control units that have a step-by-step command input or an external push-button open input, which is most of them. Check the unit's manual or ask the gate installer.

How far away does the button open it from?

Bluetooth has a limited range, a few tens of metres in the open and less with walls or cars in the way. The button is meant to be pressed in front of the gate. Test the range on site before you hand out the keyrings.

Do you need an electrician?

Yes. The Shelly 1 Gen3 wires into 230V and to the control unit input: the connections must be made by qualified personnel, with the installation isolated, following the manufacturer's diagram. The buttons need no installation at all.

What happens if there is no internet?

The BLU buttons carry on opening the door, because they talk straight to the module. Without a line there is no remote opening from the app until the connection returns. The old remote handsets, if left connected, keep working.

Are batteries included?

The BLU Button Tough buttons take a CR2032 cell; check on the Amazon listing whether it is already in the box. The kit includes a pack of spare CR2032 cells as an optional item.

Can I add more buttons?

Yes: more BLU buttons can be added by pairing them to the same module, up to the number the manufacturer states. For blocks of flats with a lot of users, get in touch through the contact page: we will work out the handiest answer together.

What if a product is out of stock on Amazon?

An item can sell out or change version. Get in touch through the contact page quoting the kit code: we will point you to an alternative that works with the other devices and with the same app, so you keep a combination we have checked and you do not have to go back over anything yourself.

Why buy on Amazon?

Purchase, payment, delivery, returns and warranty are handled by Amazon, as with any other order: delivery times, returns and warranty are shown on Amazon when you buy. The kit is our own work: we picked parts that work together, plus the accessories needed to fit them.
