Shelly 6-zone irrigation controller kit with weather station

A FrankEver Powered by Shelly controller drives up to six zones of your buried system, and the Ecowitt WS90 weather station measures rain, wind, temperature and humidity in the garden: if it is raining or has just rained, watering is skipped. The Shelly BLU gateway brings the station's data into the Shelly app, where zones and rules are set.

What it does

  • The 6-zone FrankEver controller drives the solenoid valves of the buried system, each with its own days, times and run times.
  • The Ecowitt WS90 7-in-1 weather station measures rain, wind speed, temperature, humidity, light and UV.
  • The Shelly BLU gateway receives the station's data and brings it into the Shelly app, where it becomes a condition for scenes.
  • If it is raining or the rainfall goes above the threshold you set, the watering slots are skipped; in strong wind sprinkler watering can be put back.
  • From the app you start or stop a zone by hand, even away from home, for example to check a sprinkler.
More than six zones, a system to design from scratch, or want to add soil sensors? Get in touch via the contact page and we will adapt the kit.

How it is installed

Gateway and network. The Shelly BLU Gen3 gateway is powered by the USB supply included in the kit and goes in a socket near the side of the house that faces the weather station, for example in the garage or next to a window. It joins the home Wi-Fi and receives the station's data over Bluetooth: check the distance between the two before fixing anything permanently.
Controller. The controller goes somewhere sheltered, in the plant room, in the garage or wherever the solenoid valve cables arrive, near a socket and with a good Wi-Fi signal. The wires of each solenoid valve and the common are connected to the zone terminals, following the manufacturer's diagram and checking that the valves suit the controller. The work is done with the controller disconnected.
Weather station. The WS90 is mounted at the top of a pole in the garden, in the open, away from trees, eaves and walls that shield rain and wind, orientated as the manufacturer specifies. It has to sit level to measure rainfall properly. It is powered as the manufacturer advises, with the AA cells specified.
App and pairing. In the Shelly app add the BLU gateway and the controller first with the Wi-Fi procedure, then the weather station as a Bluetooth device paired to the gateway. Give each zone a clear name, “front lawn” or “hedge” for example, and run each one for a minute to check the connections.
Recommended automations. Zone programmes at dawn, with different run times for the lawn, the beds and the hedges. Scene: rain falling, or rainfall over the last 24 hours above the threshold, cycles suspended. Strong wind: zones with sprinklers postponed. Temperature near freezing: no watering. In summer, during long hot spells, the run time can be extended.
Contents verified. The FrankEver Powered by Shelly controller and the Ecowitt WS90 weather station in the Shelly version both work in the Shelly app: the controller over Wi-Fi, the station through the Shelly BLU Gen3 gateway, and the weather data is used as a condition for the zones. The gateway is USB powered and no power supply comes in the box: that is why the kit includes a 5V USB power supply.

Before you order

Do you need a hub?

You need the Shelly BLU Gen3 gateway, included in the kit: it receives the weather station's data and brings it into the Shelly app. The controller, on the other hand, connects straight to the home Wi-Fi. No other hub is needed.

Does it work with Alexa and Google?

Yes: the Shelly devices connect to Alexa and to Google Home through the Shelly integration, by linking the account from the voice app. They work with Home Assistant too. The fuller automations, the weather-based ones for example, are built in the Shelly app.

Do you need an electrician?

Usually not, if the system with its solenoid valves is already in place and there is a socket near the controller: you connect the valve wires to the terminals following the manufacturer's diagram. That is why the kit is listed as experienced DIY. If there is no socket, or new cables have to be run, you need a professional.

Will it suit my system?

It suits buried systems with solenoid valves compatible with the controller, up to six zones. Before buying, check the type and voltage of your solenoid valves against the controller's datasheet. For systems with more zones or different valves, get in touch through the contact page.

What happens if there is no internet?

The programmes saved on the controller carry on as the manufacturer describes. Without internet, though, rules that use weather data from the cloud may not run, you get no notifications and you cannot control the zones from away.

Are batteries included?

The WS90 weather station takes AA cells: check the Amazon listing for whether they are in the box. Controller and gateway are mains-powered; the USB power supply for the gateway is included in the kit. The station's charge level is shown in the app.

Can I add devices?

Yes: Shelly modules for awnings driven by the wind, BLU sensors indoors or other Shelly devices. Everything goes into the same app and can use the weather station's readings in the scenes.

What if a product is out of stock on Amazon?

An item can go out of stock or change version. Get in touch through the contact page quoting the kit code: we will point you to an alternative that works with the other devices and with the coordinator, so the kit stays complete and performs as intended.

Why buy on Amazon?

Purchase, delivery, returns and warranty are handled by Amazon: delivery times, returns and warranty are shown on Amazon when you buy. The kit itself is our own work: we picked devices that work together and the accessories needed to fit them.
