What it does
- The Shelly Pro 1 drives the compressor contactor coil: you switch it on before the staff arrive and off at the end of the day.
- The Shelly EM, with the 50A clamp on the circuit, logs when the compressor starts, how long it runs and how much energy it uses.
- If the compressor keeps restarting at night or during the break with nothing running, there is an air leak in the pipework: the current draw shows it at once.
- A higher draw than usual for the same amount of work can point to dirty filters or a mechanical fault, to be looked at by the maintenance engineer.
- From the app you check status and consumption off site too, and switch the compressor off if it has been left running.

How it is installed
Network and consumer unit. The Shelly Pro 1 goes on the network over Ethernet with the Cat6 cables supplied, the 10 m cable reaching the router; the Shelly EM uses Wi-Fi, so you need 2.4GHz coverage near the board. If there is no room in the compressor board, the two modules go in the 8-module BTicino enclosure included, next to the start of the circuit.
Compressor switching. The Pro 1 does not feed the motor directly: its contact drives the coil of the compressor's contactor, either already there or to be fitted. The 230V wiring is for a qualified electrician, with the supply isolated, following the Shelly diagram. The compressor's safety controls and pressure switch always stay in series and live.
Metering and wiring. The Shelly EM's 50A clamp closes around a single conductor of the compressor circuit, with no cables cut; the EM takes its voltage from the same circuit, as per the diagram. Crimp ferrules are used for the wiring and Wago 221-413 connectors for the joints. Close the clamp properly and follow the direction marked.
App and setup. In the Shelly app, add the Pro 1 and the Shelly EM to the network and rename them compressor control and compressor metering. Test switching from the app and check that the EM shows the current draw while it runs and zero with the compressor stopped. Note the normal power figures and the idle running times: they will serve as a reference.
Recommended automations. Set the on and off times to the workshop's hours, with a shutdown over the lunch break as well. Set a notification if the EM sees current draw when the compressor should be off, or if the number of night-time starts climbs: that is the classic sign of a leak. An alert on power peaks helps you see when servicing is due.
Contents verified. The Shelly Pro 1 and the Shelly EM are managed in the same Shelly app. The kit includes the 8-module BTicino surface enclosure for the DIN modules with ways spare, the crimp ferrules for wiring in the board, the Wago 221-413 connectors for the joints, the 1 m Cat6 cables for connections inside the board and the 10 m Cat6 cable for the link to the router.

Before you order
Do you need a hub?
No: the Shelly Pro 1 connects to the network by cable or Wi-Fi, the Shelly EM over Wi-Fi. Both are managed with the Shelly app and the web interface, with no extra gateways.
Does the kit drive the motor directly?
No. The Pro 1 switches the contactor coil, which powers the motor: that is the right approach for compressors and pumps, with their high inrush currents. The contactor is not included; if the compressor already has one, that is the one you use.
The compressor is three-phase: is that all right?
The Shelly EM meters a single-phase circuit: on a three-phase compressor a clamp on one phase still shows when it starts, how long it runs and whether the draw changes, but not the total consumption. Full metering needs a three-phase meter: get in touch through the contact page.
Do you need an electrician?
Yes. The modules, the clamp and the wiring to the contactor coil are all at 230V in the board: the connections must be made by qualified personnel, with the installation isolated, following the manufacturer's diagram.
What happens if there is no internet?
The schedules stored on the Pro 1 keep running and the modules stay reachable from the local network. With the line down you lose control from off site and notifications on your phone, until the connection is back.
Can I add more pumps?
Yes: for each extra circuit you add a control module and, if you want to measure it, a measuring channel. The Shelly EM has a second input for a second clamp, bought separately as the manufacturer states.
What if a product is out of stock on Amazon?
