Shore power monitoring kit with Shelly EM 50A

A Shelly EM with a 50A clamp measures what the shore power is using and warns you when it goes, so you know whether the charger and the fridge are getting power. A Shelly Plug PM Gen3 socket meters the on-board fridge without ever unplugging it. It all reads out in the Shelly app, from home too.

Who it is forFor anyone paying for metered electricity in harbour or leaving the boat on shore power for long periods.
What you monitorPower and energy on the shore supply and what the on-board fridge uses.
How you control itFrom the Shelly app, with daily and monthly charts and notifications when the power goes off.
InstallationBy an electrician: the Shelly EM goes in the 230V consumer unit on the shore power circuit.

What it does

  • The Shelly EM with the 50A clamp meters instantaneous power and the energy used on the shore supply.
  • The app shows the kWh by day and by month: you can compare them with what the marina charges you.
  • If the shore supply fails, the Shelly EM goes dead and the app shows it as offline: that is your warning that the fridge and the battery charger have lost power.
  • The Shelly Plug PM Gen3 socket meters the on-board fridge and never cuts its supply: the fridge stays on at all times.
  • The fridge's consumption history tells you whether it is working harder than usual, for example because a seal is not sealing.
To measure the battery charger, the water heater or more circuits as well, or to add a 4G connection on board: get in touch through the contact page and we will adapt the combination.

How it is installed

The on-board Wi-Fi network. Both devices are Wi-Fi and need no hub, but they do need a network: the marina Wi-Fi or a router on board, neither included. For the power-failure alert to get through, the router has to stay on even without shore power: feed it from the service batteries, not from a 230V socket.
Shelly EM in the board. The Shelly EM goes in the four-module Gewiss IP65 enclosure, mounted near where the shore supply comes in. It runs on 230V from the same circuit and the 50A clamp closes around the phase conductor only. A job for qualified personnel, with the boat disconnected from the pedestal and the installation isolated.
Wiring and socket. In the enclosure you use the crimp ferrules on the flexible conductors and the Wago connectors for the taps; the cables come in through the watertight glands. The Plug PM Gen3 goes into the fridge's socket, and the fridge plugs into it.
App and pairing. In the Shelly app add the Shelly EM and the socket to the on-board Wi-Fi. On the Shelly EM set which channel the clamp is wired to and check the power reads positive with a load on; if it reads negative, the clamp needs turning round.
Recommended automations. Turn on the notification for when the Shelly EM goes offline: that is your shore-power failure alarm. Add an alert if power goes above a threshold with the boat empty, and one if the fridge sits idle, drawing nothing, for more than an hour: it may mean its protection has tripped.
Contents verified. The Shelly EM and the Plug PM Gen3 are from the same ecosystem and are read in the same app, with no hub. The kit includes the Gewiss IP65 four-module enclosure, with room for the two DIN modules needed and a way spare, the ferrules for wiring in the board, the Wago connectors for the joints and the IP68 glands for watertight cable entry.

Before you order

Do you need a hub?

No. The Shelly EM and the Plug PM Gen3 connect straight to the on-board or marina Wi-Fi network. That network does have to be there all the time: with no Wi-Fi the devices still measure, but you cannot see the data remotely and you do not get the alert.

How does the alert reach me if the power fails?

The Shelly EM is powered from the shore supply: when the power goes it switches off and the app reports it offline, with a notification if you have enabled one. For that notification to go out, the on-board router has to stay on, so it needs to run at 12V from the batteries.

Will the socket switch the fridge off?

No. The Shelly Plug PM Gen3 is a metering-only plug: it has no relay to cut the load, so the fridge stays powered even if an automation goes wrong. It is there to read its consumption.

Do you need an electrician?

Yes, for the Shelly EM: it goes in the consumer unit on the 230V shore supply. The connections must be made by qualified personnel, with the boat unplugged from the pedestal and the installation isolated. The fridge socket, on the other hand, just plugs in.

Does it work with Alexa and Google?

Yes, Shelly devices reach Alexa and Google Home through their respective integrations, and Home Assistant too. For a metering kit like this one, though, the Shelly app with its charts and notifications is what gets used.

Can I meter other circuits?

The Shelly EM has two inputs for current clamps: one clamp comes in the kit, and with a second you can meter another circuit, the battery charger for example. For other plug-in appliances another Plug PM is enough. Get in touch through the contact page for the right combination.

Are there batteries?

No. The Shelly EM runs off the shore power line and the plug off the fridge circuit: neither device uses batteries. If shore power is lost, the Shelly EM switches off and starts measuring again on its own when the supply returns.

What if a product is out of stock on Amazon?

It happens, above all with multipacks. Get in touch through the contact page quoting the kit code and the item that is missing: we will point you to an alternative that works with the rest of the set, so you can finish the order without changing the other parts.

Why buy on Amazon?

Purchase, payment, delivery, returns and warranty are handled by Amazon: delivery times, returns and warranty are shown on Amazon when you buy. The kit itself is our own work: we picked parts that work together, plus the accessories needed to fit them.
