For anyone with a single-phase solar system: the two-channel Shelly EM with two 50A clamps measures what the inverter produces and what passes through the meter, so you can see house consumption, production and the surplus fed to the grid at any moment. Figures and charts in the Shelly app, over Wi-Fi.
What it does
- The first clamp on the main switch's live conductor measures the exchange with the grid: import when you use more than you generate, export when there is surplus.
- The second clamp on the live conductor coming out of the inverter measures the solar generation.
- The app shows both readings and their trend by hour, day and month.
- You can see which hours have surplus and move the washing machine, the dishwasher and other loads into that window.
- Thresholds on exported power can send notifications or, with extra Shelly relays, switch loads on when the sun is out.

Before you order
Do you need a hub?
No. The Shelly devices in the kit connect straight to the home Wi-Fi router and are managed from the Shelly app, on a smartphone or in a browser. Good Wi-Fi coverage is needed at the consumer unit: metal enclosures and cellars weaken it.
Does it work with Alexa, Google or Apple?
The kit is managed from the Shelly app, with charts and consumption history. Through Shelly's integrations the devices can be brought into Alexa and Google Home, for example to switch off a load by voice. Readings and energy-based automations are best kept in the Shelly app.
Do you need an electrician?
Yes. The devices mount in the distribution board or in a small enclosure next to it and connect to the 230V line: the work must be done by qualified personnel with the system switched off. The kit gives the installer the enclosure, ferrules and connectors needed for tidy wiring.
What happens if the internet goes down?
Metering carries on: the Shelly devices keep logging the data and stay reachable from the app on the home network. Without internet you cannot see the data while you are out and cloud-based scenes may not run; actions configured directly on the devices keep working locally.
Can I switch loads with the surplus?
The kit measures, it does not switch. By adding a Shelly 1PM Gen3 relay or some Shelly plugs you can switch on the water heater, the heat pump or other loads when export goes above a threshold. That is what the water heater self-consumption kit does: write to us from the contact page for the composition.
Do I need to buy any batteries?
No. Every device in the kit runs off mains power and uses no batteries. So there are no spares to keep at home and no charge levels to check: if the power goes off, the devices stop and start again on their own when it comes back.
Does it suit three-phase systems or systems with a battery?
The kit is designed for a single-phase system. With a three-phase supply meter you need a three-phase measuring device such as the Shelly Pro 3EM; where a storage system is present, the measuring points have to be chosen from the layout of the installation. Write to us from the contacts section with the layout and we will tell you which combination to use.
What if a product is out of stock on Amazon?
It happens, especially with multipacks and newly released products. Write to us from the contacts section with the kit code and the product you can't find: we'll point you to an alternative that fits the rest of the kit, so it keeps working as described.
Why buy on Amazon?
We put the kit together and tested it ourselves, picking the parts and checking that they work together. Purchase, payment, returns and warranty are handled by Amazon: delivery times, returns and warranty are shown on Amazon at the time of purchase, item by item.
