What it does
- The two Shelly Plug PM Gen3 go between the wall socket and the appliance plug and measure its power and energy; they are metering-only plugs, they cannot switch the fridge off.
- The consumption figure tells you whether the compressor is running normally, whether it never cuts out, or whether it is off altogether, for example after the RCD has tripped.
- The two Shelly BLU H&T sensors, inside the appliances, send temperature and humidity over Bluetooth.
- The Shelly BLU Gen3 gateway picks up the sensor data and brings it onto the home Wi-Fi and into the app.
- With the app's thresholds you get a notification if the temperature rises above the value you set or if consumption stays at zero.

How to install it
Gateway and network. The Shelly BLU Gen3 gateway runs off one of the USB power adapters supplied and goes into a socket near the appliances, as much in the open as possible: the metal walls of fridges and freezers weaken the Bluetooth signal considerably. You add it to the Shelly app and connect it to the home Wi-Fi, checking that coverage reaches as far as the garage or the cellar.
Metering-only plugs. Each Plug PM Gen3 goes into the wall socket and the fridge or freezer plug goes into it. These are metering-only sockets: they have no switch-off control, so the appliance cannot be cut off by mistake by an automation. You add them to the Shelly app and give each one the name of its appliance.
Sensors and accessories. The BLU H&T sensor fixes to a shelf or an inner wall, away from the cold air outlet and from the door seal. The USB power supplies included are for the gateway, which does not come with one. Before leaving it all running, check in the app that the readings come through with the door closed.
App and pairing. In the Shelly app the BLU sensors are paired with the gateway and you check that temperature and humidity come through from both. Watch the plugs' consumption for a day to learn the compressor's normal cycle: how much power it draws when running and how long it stays idle.
Recommended alerts. Three notifications worth setting: freezer temperature above the threshold you choose, for example -12 °C, fridge temperature above 8 °C, and plug consumption at zero for more than an hour, a sign that the appliance has gone off. They are set up as scenes in the Shelly app, with the notification sent to your phone.
Contents verified. The Plug PM Gen3 sockets, the BLU H&T sensors and the BLU Gen3 gateway are all Shelly and are managed from the same app: the sensors go through the gateway and the sockets connect to Wi-Fi. A pack of 5V USB power supplies is included, because the BLU gateway does not come with one.

Before you order
Do you need a hub?
You need the Shelly BLU Gen3 gateway, included in the kit: it picks up the Bluetooth sensors and brings them onto the home Wi-Fi. The plugs connect to Wi-Fi directly. No other hub is needed.
Does it work with Alexa and Google Home?
Yes: Shelly devices connect to Alexa and Google Home through the official Shelly integrations, once they have been added to the Shelly app. They are also supported by Home Assistant on the local network. For Apple Home you need a device with Matter support, as stated by the manufacturer.
Do you need an electrician?
No: the plugs and the gateway go into the existing sockets and the sensors are battery-powered. You can fit everything yourself, with no tools, in a few minutes per device. All you need is a free socket for the gateway, close to the appliances.
Does the sensor work inside a freezer?
The Bluetooth signal struggles to get through metal walls and the door seal, and the cold shortens battery life. That is why the gateway should sit as close as possible to the appliances. Before relying on the alerts, check in the app that the readings come through with the door closed, within the temperature range stated by the manufacturer.
What happens if the internet goes down?
The plugs and the sensors keep measuring, but notifications only reach your phone while the connection is up. If the garage loses power, the plugs and the gateway go off as well: the zero-consumption alert only arrives if the Wi-Fi and the router stay powered.
Can I add more appliances?
Yes: for each extra fridge or freezer all you need is another metering plug and another BLU H&T sensor, run by the same gateway and the same app. For a large number of appliances, write to us from the contacts section.
Are batteries included?
The BLU H&T sensors use a CR2032 cell, normally already in the box as stated by the manufacturer. In the cold the cell lasts less: the charge level can be checked in the app.
What if a product is out of stock on Amazon?
Write to us from the contact page quoting the kit code: we will point you to a compatible alternative, checked against the other devices just like the rest of the kit. Avoid swapping an item for a similar one without checking protocol, power supply and type of connection: a different model may not work with the rest of the kit.
