Sonoff Zigbee irrigation kit for two taps with soil sensor

Two Sonoff Zigbee irrigation computers screw onto two different taps, say the balcony and a flower bed, and each waters to its own schedule. A soil moisture sensor skips a cycle when the ground is already wet. It is run from the eWeLink app, with Alexa and Google too, using the Sonoff Zigbee bridge supplied.

What it does

  • The two Sonoff irrigation timers screw onto two taps and open and close the water at the times set in the app.
  • Each computer has its own times and durations: short runs for the balcony planters, longer ones for the flower bed.
  • The Sonoff MS01 sensor measures soil moisture in the most representative zone and skips the watering cycles when the ground is already damp.
  • You can open either of the two taps by hand from the app, even when you are away.
  • The humidity history helps you set how long the runs last from week to week.

How it is installed

Bridge and network. The ZB Bridge Pro joins the home 2.4GHz Wi-Fi and goes indoors, halfway between the two taps, for example near the patio door. It is powered by a USB supply. If one tap is far away, test the Zigbee signal before putting everything in place: outside walls and distance cut the range.
Tap timer. Each computer screws onto a tap, with the right thread adapter if needed, and the hose runs from the outlet to planters, drippers or a sprinkler. The taps stay open: it is the computers that control the flow. Check that the fittings do not drip and follow the manufacturer's instructions for powering them.
Soil sensor. The MS01 sensor pushes vertically into the soil in the most important or sunniest zone, near the roots and down to the mark the manufacturer gives, with the electronics above ground. Do not put it under a dripper. The kit has one sensor only: the same reading can govern both tap timers.
App and pairing. Install eWeLink, add the bridge and pair the two timers and the sensor one at a time, holding the button down until the LED flashes. Rename the timers after their spot, “balcony” and “flower bed”, and run a short test cycle on each one, checking that the water reaches everywhere.
Recommended automations. Balcony: two short runs a day in summer, morning and evening. Flower bed: one run at dawn. Scene: if the soil is above the humidity threshold when the run is due, the run is skipped. Very dry soil: a notification. After the first few weeks, adjust the run times and the threshold from the sensor history.
Contents verified. The two irrigation timers and the MS01 sensor are Sonoff Zigbee and need a hub: they pair with the included ZB Bridge Pro, in the same eWeLink app, where the sensor can govern the watering slots of both. The kit needs no extras: tap-mounted timers and a battery sensor.

Before you order

Do you need a hub?

Yes: the Sonoff Zigbee devices talk to the ZB Bridge Pro included in the kit, which links them to the home 2.4GHz Wi-Fi and to the eWeLink app. Without the bridge, the timer and the sensors cannot be controlled from the app. The kit's two irrigation computers are Zigbee and cannot be programmed without the bridge.

Does it work with Alexa and Google?

Yes, through the eWeLink app: you link the account to the Alexa skill or to the Google Home app and can start the watering or ask for the status by voice. With Apple Home there is no direct integration we can guarantee for every item in the kit.

Do you need an electrician?

No. The water computers screw onto the taps, the sensor pushes into the soil and the bridge runs off a USB power supply indoors. No electrical work and nothing to change on the water system.

Is one sensor enough for two taps?

Yes, for areas with similar aspect and planting: the same reading decides for both. If the balcony and the bed are very different, one in sun and one in shade for instance, a second MS01 sensor is worth having, and it joins the same bridge in a few minutes.

What happens if there is no internet?

With no internet you cannot control the tap timers from outside and you get no notifications. Check in the app how the scheduled runs behave without a connection: some schedules may stay active, as the manufacturer states. When the line comes back everything resumes.

Are batteries included?

The tap timer and the sensor run on batteries: the type, and whether they come in the box, is stated by the manufacturer on the Amazon listing. The charge level shows in eWeLink; it is worth checking at the start of the season and before the holidays.

Can I add devices?

Yes: more soil sensors, a third irrigation computer for another tap or an outdoor temperature sensor. The bridge handles plenty of Sonoff Zigbee devices in the same app, and new items drop into the existing scenes.

What do I need to do in winter?

Before the frost, take the timer off the tap, drain it and store it indoors with the hoses, as you would with any tap timer. The soil sensor can stay in the ground within the limits the manufacturer gives, or come in and go back out in spring.

What if a product is out of stock on Amazon?

An item can go out of stock or change version. Get in touch through the contact page quoting the kit code: we will point you to an alternative that works with the other devices and with the coordinator, so the kit stays complete and performs as intended.
