Shelly Pro 1 communal car park lighting kit with 25A contactor

A DIN-rail Shelly Pro 1 drives a 25A contactor that switches the block's car park lights on at sunset and off at dawn, with astronomical times that follow the seasons. Whoever manages the building checks the status and changes the times from the Shelly app, without going to the board.

What it does

  • The Shelly Pro 1 drives the contactor coil, which in turn feeds the car park lighting circuit.
  • The schedules follow sunrise and sunset worked out from the location: no need to adjust them every change of season.
  • A night-time switch-off can be added, at midnight for example, with the lights coming back on before dawn.
  • The Shelly app shows whether the circuit is on and lets you switch it on by hand if you need to.
  • The Shelly Pro 1 goes on the network by cable or over Wi-Fi: in a meter room the cable is usually more reliable.
More circuits to switch, a dusk sensor or the stairwell lights as well? Get in touch from the contact page and we will suggest the right configuration for the building.

How it is installed

Network. The building's router, or the one in the plant room, is reached with the 10 m Cat6 cable included, plugged into the LAN port of the Shelly Pro 1; if the cable will not reach, use Wi-Fi, checking the signal at the enclosure first. With no connection the module still works, but cannot be managed remotely.
Shelly Pro 1 and contactor. The electrician fits the 4-module Gewiss IP65 enclosure near the communal board and mounts the Shelly Pro 1 and the 25A contactor in it. The Shelly output feeds the contactor coil, and the contactor contacts feed the lamp post circuit. Work on 230V is done with the power off, by qualified personnel.
Wiring and sealing. The IP68 cable glands take the cables into the enclosure while keeping it sealed, even in a damp room or outdoors under a canopy. The crimp ferrules terminate the conductors in the terminals, and the Wago 221 connectors make the joints. The contactor stays protected by the line's existing MCB.
App and pairing. In the Shelly app you add the Pro 1, put it on the network and set the building's location, which is needed to work out sunrise and sunset. The account can be shared between the managing agent and the caretaker, so both see the state and get the notifications.
Recommended automations. Switch-on a few minutes before sunset, switch-off at sunrise. Where the council requires it, part of the line goes off in the middle of the night. A notification if the line fails to come on at the set time helps you spot a fault on the line or in the lamps straight away.
Contents verified. The Shelly Pro 1 drives the 25A modular contactor, which carries the lighting circuit load. Included are the 4-module Gewiss IP65 enclosure (2 DIN ways plus spare), the IP68 glands for watertight cable entry, the ferrules for wiring inside the board, the Wago 221 connectors for the joints, five 1 metre Cat6 cables and one 10 metre cable for the run to the router.

Before you order

Do you need a hub?

No. The Shelly Pro 1 connects to the router by cable or over Wi-Fi and is managed from the Shelly app. All you need is a connection at the distribution board, usually the building's router or the one in the plant room.

Why is there a contactor?

The Shelly drives the contactor and the contactor carries the current for the lamp posts. That way the Shelly relay only ever sees a small load and the lighting circuit has switchgear sized for the job. The electrician still has to check the rating against the load on that circuit.

Do you need an electrician?

Yes. The kit goes in the board serving the common areas and runs on 230V: the connections must be made by qualified personnel with the installation isolated, working within the building's existing installation.

What happens if there is no internet?

The schedules programmed into the module keep running without internet, as far as the manufacturer's local features allow. With no connection you cannot see the status in the app and no notifications arrive until the line is back.

Does it work with Alexa and Google?

Yes, with the Shelly integrations, but in a block of flats it is rarely needed: everything runs on schedules and the app. The account can be shared with several authorised people, the building manager and the caretaker for example.

Can I control other lights as well?

Yes, by adding more Shelly Pro modules and contactors in the consumer unit, which has spare ways. For stairwell lighting, which usually runs on push-buttons and a timer, get in touch through the contact page.

What if a product is out of stock on Amazon?

Get in touch through the contact page quoting the kit code: we will point you to an alternative that works with the rest of the set, so you do not have to hunt for an equivalent model yourself and risk buying a part that will not talk to the other devices in the kit.

Why buy on Amazon?

Purchase, delivery, returns and warranty are handled by Amazon: delivery times, returns and warranty are shown on Amazon when you buy. The kit is our own work: we picked parts that work together, plus the accessories you actually need to fit it.
