Shelly automatic henhouse kit, pop hole door and heat lamp

Opens and closes the hen-house hatch on sunrise and sunset, switches the heat lamp on when it is cold and keeps an eye on temperature and humidity. Built for hobby keepers: a Shelly 2PM Gen3 drives the hatch motor, a 1PM Gen3 the lamp, and everything is run from the Shelly app.

InstallationBy an electrician: the 230V modules go in the watertight enclosure supplied.

What it does

  • The Shelly 2PM Gen3 in shutter mode opens the hatch in the morning and closes it in the evening, with times tied to sunrise and sunset.
  • The Shelly 1PM Gen3 switches the heat lamp on and off and meters its consumption.
  • The BLU H&T sensor inside the hen house measures temperature and humidity; below the threshold you set, the lamp comes on.
  • In the app you see whether the hatch is open or closed and can operate it by hand when you need to.
  • A notification warns you if the hen house gets too warm or too cold.
  • The BLU gateway puts the Bluetooth sensor's data on the network even if the coop is at the bottom of the garden.
For a second coop, lighting to extend the daylight hours, a frost-free drinker or a 12V pop hole motor, get in touch from the contact page: we will suggest the right configuration.

How it is installed

Network and gateway. The hen house has to be covered by the home 2.4GHz Wi-Fi, with an extender if need be. The BLU Gen3 gateway runs off one of the USB power supplies included and goes somewhere dry halfway between house and hen house, in a window onto the garden for example. Add it to the Shelly app first.
Hatch and lamp modules. The 2PM Gen3 wires to the pop-hole motor in roller-shutter mode, with the open and close lines on the two outputs, following the manufacturer's diagram; the motor has to have limit switches. The 1PM Gen3 feeds the heat lamp. The 230V wiring is for a qualified electrician with the supply isolated.
Accessories and wiring. The two modules go in the IP65 weatherproof enclosure, fixed outside the coop or under a canopy, away from dust and animals. The Wago connectors are for the live and neutral taps, the IP68 cable glands for watertight cable entry. The BLU H&T sensor goes high up inside the coop, out of reach of the birds.
App and pairing. In the Shelly app you add the two modules to the Wi-Fi, set the 2PM to roller-shutter mode and run the travel calibration on the hatch. Then pair the BLU H&T sensor. Use clear names, such as “Hen-house hatch” and “Hen-house lamp”, and try opening and closing from the app.
Recommended automations. The hatch opens a while after sunrise and closes after sunset, once the birds are back in. The lamp comes on below a minimum temperature and goes off above a second threshold, with a safety switch-off time. A notification when the hatch closes confirms every evening that the hen house is shut.
Contents verified. Modules, gateway and sensor are from the Shelly range and run in the same app. Included are the Wago lever connectors for the module joints, the IP65 weatherproof box for keeping the modules outdoors, the IP68 glands for watertight cable entry and the USB power supplies, as the gateway does not come with one.

Before you order

Do you need a hub?

Not a traditional hub. The two Shelly modules use the home Wi-Fi, which has to reach the hen house, and the Bluetooth sensor goes through the BLU Gen3 gateway included. Everything is managed from the Shelly app.

What motor does the hatch need?

A 230V two-phase motor, open and close, with its own limit switches, of the type that works with the Shelly 2PM's roller-shutter mode. The motor and the sliding pop hole are not included. If you already have a 12V motor, get in touch through the contact page for a different answer.

Do you need an electrician?

Yes: the 2PM and the 1PM run at 230V and the connections must be made by qualified personnel with the installation isolated, inside the weatherproof box supplied. The sensor and the gateway simply sit in place, with no electrical work.

What happens if there is no internet?

If the home Wi-Fi stays up, the modules answer commands on the local network and the schedules set on the devices keep running. Notifications and control from outside the house resume when the line comes back.

Is the sensor battery included?

The BLU H&T sensor takes a CR2032 battery; what comes as standard is stated on the item's Amazon listing. The charge level shows in the app, which warns when it is time to replace it.

Can I add devices?

Yes: a relay for the daylight-hours lighting, a second sensor, a module for the heated drinker. They go into the same Shelly app and work in the same scenes, to switch the light on only when the pop hole is open for example.

Does it work with Alexa and Google?

The Shelly app links to Alexa and Google Home: you can ask for the hen house temperature or close the pop hole by voice. Times tied to sunrise and sunset are better set in the Shelly app.

What if a product is out of stock on Amazon?

An item can go out of stock or be replaced by a new version. Get in touch through the contact page: we will point you to an alternative that works with the rest of the kit, so you do not have to check it against the other devices yourself.

Why buy on Amazon?

Purchase, payment, delivery, returns and warranty are handled by Amazon and by the sellers of the individual items. The kit is our own work: we choose the parts, check that they work together and tell you how to fit it. Delivery times, returns and warranty are shown on Amazon when you buy.
