What it does
- The 4G router with a data SIM creates the Wi-Fi network in the well house and puts the devices online.
- The Shelly Pro 1 switches the pump on and off from the app, by hand or on a watering schedule.
- For more powerful pumps the Pro 1 switches a contactor coil instead of carrying the load directly.
- The Shelly EM with the 50A clamp meters the pump's power and consumption and keeps the history.
- If the pump draws far less than normal, the classic sign of dry running, a rule switches it off and sends a notification.
- In the app you can see at any time whether the pump is running and how much it has used over the day or the month.

How it is installed
4G router. The RUT241 goes in the well house, somewhere dry and as high as possible for a good mobile signal. You fit a data SIM from any network, not included, and power it with the supply in the box. From the router's panel you set up the 2.4GHz Wi-Fi network the Shelly modules will join.
Modules in the board. The Shelly Pro 1 and the Shelly EM mount on DIN rail in the 8-module BTicino IP65 enclosure, which leaves ways spare. The Pro 1 switches the pump directly if its current draw is within the device's limits; otherwise it switches a contactor coil. Work on 230V must be done by qualified personnel with the installation isolated.
Accessories and wiring. The Shelly EM current clamp clips onto the phase conductor feeding the pump, without breaking into it. The crimp ferrules are for the conductors in the module terminals, the Wago connectors for the joints inside the board, the IP68 glands for bringing cables in with a seal. The pump's existing protection devices stay where they are.
App and pairing. In the Shelly app you add the two modules by joining them to the router's Wi-Fi. Rename the Pro 1 “Well pump” and check the EM reads power while the pump is running. Make a note of the normal full-load current draw: you will need it to set the dry-running threshold.
Recommended automations. A rule switches the Pro 1 off and sends a notification if, a few tens of seconds after starting, the measured power stays below the dry-running threshold. Timed programmes for watering and a maximum run time stop the pump being left on by mistake. The threshold is set from the readings gathered over the first few days.
Contents verified. The router, the relay and the meter work on the same Wi-Fi network and are run in the Shelly app; the 4G router stands in for an internet line where there is none. Included are the 8-module BTicino IP65 enclosure, sized for the DIN modules with room spare, the crimp ferrules for the wiring in the board, the Wago connectors for the joints in the board and the IP68 glands for watertight cable entry.

Before you order
Do you need a hub?
No. The Shelly modules connect over Wi-Fi to the 4G router included, which takes everything online with a data SIM. Nothing else is needed: the Shelly app on your phone reaches the modules through the router.
Do you need a SIM?
Yes, a data SIM from any network, not included. The traffic for commands and readings from a few modules is small: a basic data plan is usually enough. Check the mobile coverage at the well before installing.
Do you need an electrician?
Yes. The Pro 1 and the EM are wired at 230V in the pump board and, on larger pumps, to a contactor: the work must be done by qualified personnel with the installation isolated, keeping the existing protective devices in place.
How does it detect dry running?
A pump running dry draws less current than normal. The Shelly EM measures power continuously and a rule switches the pump off if the figure stays below a threshold for a set time. It is an extra layer of protection: it does not replace float switches or the pump's own protection devices.
What happens if there is no mobile signal?
The pump stays as it is and app control resumes once the signal returns. That is why it is worth setting a maximum run time and keeping the pump's own protection devices, which do not depend on the connection.
Can I add devices?
Yes: more Shelly units for zone solenoid valves or a second pump, sensors for the tank level, more meters. They all connect to the same router and run in the same app.
Can I switch a three-phase pump?
Yes, through a three-phase contactor driven by the Pro 1; metering the consumption on all three phases then calls for a three-phase meter, such as the Shelly Pro 3EM. Get in touch through the contact page for the right build.
