Shelly and Sonoff restaurant kit: kitchen gas, fridge probes and dining room lighting

For restaurants and trattorias that want more control over the kitchen and the dining room. The Shelly Gas detector for LPG, with the actuator on the valve, shuts the gas off if there is a leak; two waterproof Sonoff probes keep an eye on the fridge temperatures through a Zigbee hub; four Shelly vintage bulbs set the light level in the dining room. Alarms and control from your phone.

Who it is forRestaurants, trattorias and pizzerias with an LPG kitchen and fridges to keep an eye on.
What you monitorLPG leaks with valve shut-off, the temperature of two fridges, four lights in the dining room.
How you control itShelly app for gas and lights, eWeLink app for the probes, with notifications on your phone.
InstallationExperienced DIY: no 230V wiring, but careful placing of the detector and the gas actuator.

What it does

  • The Shelly Gas detector for LPG watches the air in the kitchen and, if it senses gas, sounds and sends an alarm to your phone.
  • The actuator wired to the detector turns the lever of the gas valve and closes it automatically when the alarm goes off.
  • The two Sonoff SNZB-02LD waterproof probes, with their tips inside the fridge, read the temperature and warn you if it rises above the threshold, because of a door left open for example.
  • The Sonoff ZB Bridge Pro hub collects the data from the Zigbee probes and brings it into the eWeLink app.
  • The four Shelly ST64 vintage bulbs are switched and dimmed from the app, with different scenes for lunch, dinner and closing.
For natural gas kitchens, more fridges or cold rooms, more dining room lights or the outdoor sign, get in touch through the contact page: we will tell you the right combination for your premises.

How it is installed

Hub and network. The Sonoff ZB Bridge Pro hub goes in the dining room or the office, in a central position and not shut in a metal cupboard, powered as the manufacturer advises. It is added to the eWeLink app and connected to the Wi-Fi of the premises. It is only needed for the fridge probes: the gas detector and the Shelly lamps connect straight to Wi-Fi and are managed in the Shelly app.
The detector and the gas valve. LPG is heavier than air: the detector goes low down, near the floor, in the position the manufacturer specifies, away from flames, the hood and doors. The actuator fits onto the gas lever valve following the Shelly instructions, after checking that the valve is compatible and that the lever moves freely. The kit works alongside the kitchen's mandatory safety devices; it does not replace them.
The fridge probes. The SNZB-02LD probes have the sensing part on the lead: the tip goes inside the fridge, on a middle shelf, and the body with the battery outside, fixed to the wall or the side of the appliance. The lead passes through the door seal without crushing it; check that the door still closes properly afterwards. Avoid resting the tip against the cold wall.
App and pairing. In the eWeLink app you pair the two probes to the hub with the setup wizard and name each fridge. In the Shelly app you add the gas detector, pair the valve actuator following the maker's instructions and add the four bulbs to the Wi-Fi. Run the detector's test and try closing the valve with the cooker off.
Recommended automations. For the probes, set an alarm threshold, for example above 6°C for more than twenty minutes, with a notification to several members of staff. The gas detector closes the valve by itself when it goes off: add a notification to the owner and the head chef. For the lights, create dining room scenes at different levels and a switch-off at the end of service.
Contents verified. The Shelly Gas detector and the valve actuator are designed to work together and are run in the Shelly app, as are the Vintage ST64 bulbs, which use Wi-Fi. The Sonoff SNZB-02LD probes are Zigbee and pair with the ZB Bridge Pro hub included, in the eWeLink app. The kit needs no wiring sundries because there is nothing to connect at 230V.

Before you order

Do you need a hub?

Only for the fridge probes, which are Zigbee: the Sonoff ZB Bridge Pro hub is included. The gas detector, the valve actuator and the Shelly bulbs connect straight to the Wi-Fi on the premises, with no hub, and run in the Shelly app.

Is the detector suitable for natural gas?

No: this kit contains the LPG version, which is fitted low down because LPG is heavier than air. A natural gas kitchen needs the dedicated version, fitted high up. Get in touch through the contact page and we will give you the right part number.

Does it replace the mandatory safety systems?

No. The kit adds a remote alarm and automatic valve shut-off, but it does not replace the systems, devices and checks that regulations require in commercial kitchens. For those, refer to your gas installer and safety consultant.

Do you need an electrician?

No, there is no 230V wiring: the detector is powered as the manufacturer states, the bulbs go into the existing lamp holders and the probes run on batteries. The valve actuator does need fitting accurately on the gas line, though: that is why the level is experienced DIY.

Does it work with Alexa or Google Home?

The Shelly bulbs and the probes managed by eWeLink can be linked to Alexa and Google Home through each app's integrations. For gas and fridge alarms it is better to rely on the notifications from the Shelly and eWeLink apps, which are where the kit is managed.

What happens if there is no internet?

The gas detector sounds and shuts the valve on its own, with no need for a connection. The probes carry on measuring, but notifications only arrive once the line is back. The bulbs always come on from the wall switch.

Can I add more fridges?

Yes: you can pair more Zigbee probes to the hub, one for each fridge, cold room or display cabinet. For more lights, add more Shelly bulbs. Get in touch through the contact page if you have large cold rooms or rooms a long way from the hub.

What if a product is out of stock on Amazon?

An item can sell out or change version. Get in touch through the contact page quoting the kit code: we will point you to an alternative that works with the other devices and with the same app, so you keep a combination we have checked and you do not have to go back over anything yourself.

Why buy on Amazon?

Purchase, payment, delivery, returns and warranty are handled by Amazon, as with any other order: delivery times, returns and warranty are shown on Amazon when you buy. The kit is our own work: we picked parts that work together, plus the accessories needed to fit them.
