Sonoff Zigbee kit for a ventilated attic and loft

An IP65 temperature and humidity sensor with a display reads the air in the loft, and a 16A Zigbee relay switches the extractor on when it gets too hot or too humid, and off again when the readings return to normal. It is managed from the eWeLink app, with Alexa and Google too, using the included Sonoff Zigbee bridge.

Who it's forLofts, roof spaces and attic rooms that overheat in summer or suffer from condensation.
What you controlTemperature, humidity and switching of the extractor or the fan.
How you control itAutomatic thresholds in eWeLink, manual control from the app or by voice.
InstallationThe relay works at 230V on the extractor fan line: an electrician is needed.

What it does

  • The SNZB-02WD sensor measures the loft's temperature and humidity and shows them on its display.
  • The 16A Sonoff MINI ONE Zigbee relay switches on the existing extractor fan when temperature or humidity goes above the threshold you set.
  • Once the readings are back within range, the extractor fan switches off by itself; you can also set time slots, for example daytime only.
  • The app shows how heat and humidity change and how much work the extractor fan is doing.
  • You can switch the extractor fan on and off by hand, from the app or by voice.

How to install it

Bridge and network. The ZB Bridge Pro connects to the home 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi and goes as close as possible to the loft, for example on the top floor below the hatch. The relay, being mains powered, helps relay the signal to the sensor. Concrete floors and insulation with metal foil cut the range: test reception before fitting.
Temperature and humidity sensor. The sensor fixes to a beam or to a wall halfway along the loft, at the height of the air you want to measure, away from the extractor fan, the vents and the sun-facing tiles. That way it reads the room's air and not a hot spot. It is IP65: it stands up to the dust and damp of a loft.
Relays and wiring. The MINI ONE relay goes in line with the supply to the extractor fan, in a junction box or in its switch back box. The 230V connections must be made by qualified personnel with the system isolated, checking that the fan's current draw stays within the relay's limits. Wago connectors included; deep 503 back boxes or the Gewiss box are optional.
App and pairing. Install eWeLink and add the bridge. Pair the relay first, since it strengthens the Zigbee network, then the climate sensor, holding the pairing button down until the LED flashes. Rename the devices: “loft climate” and “extractor fan”. Switch the fan on from the app to check the connection, then leave the sensor a few hours to see the typical readings before setting the thresholds.
Recommended automations. Temperature above the threshold you set: extractor on; a few degrees below that threshold: off, so it does not keep switching on and off. High humidity: extractor on in the evening as well. Very high temperature for hours: notification. In winter you can leave just the humidity rule running, against condensation.
Contents verified. The climate sensor and the relay are Sonoff Zigbee devices and pair with the ZB Bridge Pro included, in the same eWeLink app where you build the rule between threshold and switch-on. Being mains powered, the relay also repeats the signal towards the loft. The Wago lever connectors for wiring the relay are included; deep 503 back boxes and the Gewiss junction box are optional, for when the module will not fit behind the switch insert or has to go in a junction box.

Before you order

Do you need a hub?

Yes, for the Zigbee devices: the Sonoff ZB Bridge Pro included in the kit links them to the home 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi and to the eWeLink app. Without the bridge the Zigbee sensors do not work.

Does it work with Alexa and Google?

Yes, through the eWeLink app: you link your eWeLink account to the Alexa skill or to the Google Home app and the devices show up there, ready for voice commands and routines. With Apple Home there is no direct integration that we can guarantee for every part of the kit.

Do you need an electrician?

Yes. The relay is wired into the extractor fan's 230V circuit: the work must be done by qualified personnel with the system isolated, who also check the fan's power against the relay's limits. The sensor, on the other hand, you fix yourself with screws or double-sided tape.

Does any extractor fan work?

Any extractor or fan that starts as soon as it gets power will do, that is, one controlled by a switch. The relay simply gives it power and takes it away. Models with electronic controls that stay off when power returns are not suitable. The extractor is not included.

What happens if the internet goes down?

The sensor keeps showing the values on its display. Without internet you get no notifications and cannot control anything from outside the house; some scenes may stay active locally on the bridge, as stated by the manufacturer. The extractor fan can still be operated from its switch, where there is one.

Are batteries included?

The climate sensor runs on a battery, supplied in the box as stated by the manufacturer; the level is shown in eWeLink. In very hot lofts its life can be shorter: worth checking at the end of the summer. The relay is mains-powered.

Can I add devices?

Yes: a second sensor for the living floor, another relay for a second extractor fan or a water leak sensor near the tank or the boiler in the loft. The bridge handles many Sonoff Zigbee devices.

What if a product is out of stock on Amazon?

An item can go out of stock or switch to a new version. Write to us from the contacts section with the kit code: we'll point you to an alternative that works with the other devices and with the coordinator, so the kit stays complete and performs as intended.

Why buy on Amazon?
