What it does
- The Ecowitt WS90 7-in-1 station measures wind speed, rain, temperature, humidity, light and UV.
- The Shelly BLU Gen3 gateway receives the data over Bluetooth and brings it into the Shelly app, with charts and history.
- You get a notification when it starts to rain, when the wind goes above a threshold or when the temperature drops close to freezing.
- With Shelly modules for the awning and the irrigation, not included, the awning retracts in strong wind and the watering is skipped when it rains.
- The weather data can also be used in Home Assistant through the Shelly integration.

How it is installed
Gateway and network. The Shelly BLU Gen3 gateway is powered by the USB supply included in the kit and goes in a socket on the side of the house facing the station, near a window. It joins the home 2.4GHz Wi-Fi and receives the WS90's data over Bluetooth: test the distance before fixing anything permanently, because walls and coated glass cut it down.
Weather station. The WS90 is mounted at the top of a pole, in an open spot, away from trees, eaves, chimneys and walls that deflect rain and wind. It has to sit level, orientated as the manufacturer specifies, to measure rainfall and wind direction properly. On a roof it has to be fixed safely: if climbing is involved, use a professional.
Power supply. The station is powered as the manufacturer specifies, with the AA cells provided for: check the Amazon listing for whether they are in the box. The gateway, on the other hand, stays powered from the socket. The kit has no other accessories to wire: no cables between station and house.
App and pairing. In the Shelly app add the BLU gateway with the Wi-Fi procedure, then add the station as a Bluetooth device paired to the gateway. Check all the readings come through and that the wind direction is right by comparing it with what you can see. From there the data is available for notifications and scenes.
Recommended automations. Rain starting: notification. Wind above the threshold you set: notification and, with a Shelly awning module, the awning retracted. Rain in the last 24 hours: watering suspended, if you have a Shelly controller. Temperature near freezing: notification so you can protect plants and pipes. High UV: awning out automatically.
Contents verified. The Shelly version of the Ecowitt WS90 and the Shelly BLU Gen3 gateway are meant to work together in the Shelly app: the gateway picks up the data over Bluetooth and makes it available to scenes alongside the other Shelly devices. The gateway is USB-powered and the power supply is not in the box: that is why the kit includes a 5V USB power supply.

Before you order
Do you need a hub?
You need the Shelly BLU Gen3 gateway, included in the kit: the station transmits over Bluetooth and the gateway takes the data to the Wi-Fi and the Shelly app. No other hub is needed, and the same gateway can serve other Shelly BLU sensors too.
Does it work with Alexa and Google?
Yes: the Shelly devices connect to Alexa and to Google Home through the Shelly integration, by linking the account from the voice app. They work with Home Assistant too. The fuller automations, the weather-based ones for example, are built in the Shelly app.
Do you need an electrician?
No. The station is wireless and the gateway goes into a socket with the USB power supply. All you need is a pole or a solid bracket for the station; for roof mounting, use someone equipped to work safely at height.
Does it control the awnings on its own?
No, the station measures and the gateway brings the data into the app. To retract the awnings or hold off the watering you need Shelly devices that drive them, such as a module for motorised awnings or an irrigation controller, which are not included. What happens if there is no internet?
The station carries on measuring and the gateway carries on receiving, but without internet you cannot see the data from away and you get no notifications. Scenes that rely on the Shelly cloud do not run until the connection is back.
Are batteries included?
The WS90 station takes AA cells: check the Amazon listing for whether they are in the box. The gateway is mains-powered, with the USB power supply included in the kit. The station's charge level is shown in the Shelly app.
Can I add devices?
Yes: Shelly modules for awnings and roller shutters, irrigation controllers, BLU sensors indoors or outdoor sockets. They all go into the same app and can use the weather station's readings in the scenes.
What if a product is out of stock on Amazon?
