Customisable kits. This is one of the Milesight LoRaWAN kits in the Smart Home section. For different installations, tailor-made kits or custom automations, write to us from the contact section.
Several sizes. The figures, diagram and table on this page describe the «4 cubicles, 2 blocks» size. The other sizes are selected above and are listed further down, under «Available sizes».
4 cubiclesFree or occupied status and use count, with a ceiling sensor without a camera.
Odours in the blockAmmonia from 0 to 10 ppm and hydrogen sulphide from 0 to 5 ppm, with temperature and humidity.
Call buttonThree distinct types of press: for example cleaning request, paper run out, request for help.
Water leaksAlarm with 0.5 mm of water on the floor, behind the sanitary fittings or under the washbasins.

What it does

  • The ceiling sensor in each cubicle detects whether it is free or occupied, without a camera. The number of uses in the day is derived from the changes of status.
  • The odour detector in each block measures ammonia and hydrogen sulphide together with temperature and humidity: the team goes out when the threshold is exceeded or after a certain number of uses, not on a fixed schedule.
  • The button in the cubicle distinguishes a short press, a long press and a double press: a meaning is assigned to each one, from reporting a cubicle to be cleaned to a request for help.
  • The floor leak sensor reports water where it should not be behind the sanitary fittings or under the washbasins: a blocked drain, a broken hose, an overflowing cistern. It also has a built-in buzzer.
  • The outdoor gateway, on a building or on a pole, covers the blocks scattered across the park or the service area and sends the data to the cloud over the network or on 4G.
  • History, charts and notifications can be consulted from a smartphone and from a PC.
For a different number of cubicles or blocks, urinals and vestibules to cover, toilets in areas without power where a solar gateway is needed, several parks or several rest areas to manage together: tell us the number of blocks, cubicles and distances from the contact section and we will propose the right configuration together with the quotation.
Public toilets and parks kit Litio Store: installation diagram in a public toilet block in a park
1Outdoor LoRaWAN gateway, high up on a building or on a pole: it collects the data of all the blocks and sends it to the cloud via PoE Ethernet or 4G.
2Ceiling occupancy sensor, above the toilet. One per cubicle, four in the kit.
3Wall-mounted odour detector, 2.0-2.5 m above the floor, in the common area of the block. One per block, two in the kit.
4Wall-mounted call button, inside the cubicle, sheltered from splashes. Four in the kit.
5Water leak sensor on the floor, behind the sanitary fittings or under the washbasins. Two in the kit.

How it is installed

Gateway. On top of a pole (diameter from 67 to 127 mm) or on the upper part of the wall of a building in the park, with the two antennas vertical and at least 35 cm from the walls. PoE power along the Ethernet cable, with the injector indoors near a socket. Connectors wrapped with insulating tape and waterproof tape, earth connection made. IP67 protection, operation from -40 to +70 °C.
Occupancy sensors. On the ceiling, at a height between 2.5 and 3 m, horizontal, with the centre of the sensor 10-20 cm from the centre of the toilet and the sensitive part facing the front of the pan. Fastening with two screws and wall plugs or with double-sided tape. Away from direct sunlight, mirrors and glass. With the test mode you check that the movement of the door does not trigger it. It is an indoor device (IP30): it must be kept away from water.
Odour detectors. On the wall with the bracket and two screws, between 2.0 and 2.5 m above the floor, in the common area of the block. Not next to doors, windows, grilles or ventilation fans, nor where deodorants, fragrances or alcohol-based cleaners are sprayed: they distort the measurement. Away from water and jets (IP30). After switch-on, about 30 minutes are needed before the gas readings are valid.
Buttons and leak sensors. Button on the wall inside the cubicle, with screws or double-sided tape, within reach and sheltered from splashes: it is an indoor device (IP30) and must not be mounted outdoors in the rain. Leak sensor resting on the floor, horizontal, at the point where the water arrives first or where it stagnates; it is IP67 and triggers with 0.5 mm of water.
Configuration. Via NFC with a smartphone and the manufacturer's free app: reading intervals, thresholds, meaning of the three button presses, name of each cubicle and of each block. The gateway is configured from a browser. No cables and no paid software are needed.
Documentation included. Written installation guide with heights, distances from the toilet, points to avoid for the odour detector and switch-on sequence, and initial configuration of thresholds and notifications based on the blocks indicated when ordering.

Before you order

There is no network or Wi-Fi in the toilets: is it needed?

No. The sensors transmit by radio to the gateway, and only the gateway goes on the network. In the basic version it is connected with the Ethernet cable, which also carries the power, to the network of a nearby building: park offices, kiosk, municipal depot, service station. If there is no network, the same gateway works on 4G with a data SIM (not included, any operator, traffic below 1 GB per month): all it needs is a socket for the PoE injector. Where there is no power either, the version with a solar gateway is available. It is chosen when ordering.

Is one gateway enough for the whole park?

The manufacturer declares up to 2 km in an urban area and 15 km in open field. The sensors, however, are inside masonry or prefabricated blocks, and the walls reduce the range: the gateway goes high up, in line of sight of the blocks as far as possible. An urban park or a service area is normally covered with a single gateway; for metal, semi-underground or very distant blocks, a second gateway is considered. One gateway handles hundreds of sensors.

Does the sensor in the cubicle film people?

No. It has no camera and produces no images: it combines an infrared motion sensor with a distance measurement, and transmits only the free or occupied status. The data is anonymous.

Does the button count as the emergency call for an accessible toilet?

No. It is a battery-powered radio button that sends a notification to the smartphone of whoever runs the service, useful for cleaning requests and for an extra way to signal for help. It does not replace the call system required by the regulations for accessible toilets, and the notification is only sent if the gateway and the network are working.

The toilets are washed with a pressure lance: do the sensors withstand it?

The leak sensor and the gateway are IP67. The occupancy sensor, the odour detector and the button are indoor devices (IP30): they are on the ceiling or high up on the wall, and during washing the jet must not be aimed at them. They are not suitable for self-cleaning toilets that wash the whole cubicle at every cycle. The leak sensor works from -10 to +60 °C, the other sensors from -20 °C.

I have more blocks or more cubicles

Among the product options you will find the 2, 4 and 8 cubicle sizes. The rule is one occupancy sensor and one button per cubicle, one odour detector and one leak sensor per block; the gateway and the platform stay the same. For different compositions, write to us from the contact section stating the number of blocks, cubicles per block and distances: we will send you the composition and the quotation for the adapted kit.

Battery life and service life of the sensors

Occupancy sensor: about 4 years with 90 uses per day. Odour detector: about 3 years with one reading every 10 minutes; the gas measuring cells have a life of 3 years, then the detector must be replaced. Button: over 7 years with 10 presses per day. Leak sensor: over 5 years with a button cell. These are the values declared by the manufacturer at 25 °C; the charge level is visible in the app.

Where is the data consulted and are there any subscription fees?

On the manufacturer's app and portal, from a smartphone and a PC, with charts, thresholds and notifications; no fee for basic use. If there is a maintenance management software or a municipal platform, the gateway can also send the data to that system (MQTT or HTTP): the configuration is included.

What happens if the gateway loses its network connection?

The sensors keep working and the leak sensor sounds anyway with its buzzer, but as long as the gateway is without internet the notifications do not arrive, including those from the button. Where the line is not reliable, the 4G version is preferable.

Is an electrician needed?

No. All the sensors are battery-powered and are fastened with screws, wall plugs or double-sided tape. The gateway is powered at very low voltage from the Ethernet cable; the PoE injector is plugged into a normal socket indoors. The work involved is mounting the pole and laying the network cable.

What is not included
  • Sanitary fittings, doors, locks and toilet furnishings: the existing ones are used
  • The data SIM, if the gateway is used on 4G
  • The network point and the socket for the gateway's PoE injector
  • Any protective enclosures for the indoor devices
  • In the "devices only" version: pole, network cable, cable glands and small parts
