SG-Ready heat pump kit with Shelly Pro 2 and Shelly EM

The Shelly EM uses two clamps to measure solar generation and the exchange with the grid; when there is surplus energy, the Shelly Pro 2 closes the heat pump's SG-Ready inputs and makes it work harder, storing heat or hot water. Everything sits in a DIN enclosure connected to the router, with no hub. It is managed from the Shelly app.

Who it's forAnyone with a heat pump with SG-Ready inputs and a solar system.
What you controlThe heat pump's four SG-Ready states, according to the solar surplus.
How you control itShelly automations, Shelly app, integrations with Home Assistant.
InstallationElectrician needed: modules in the enclosure, clamps in the consumer unit, contacts wired to the heat pump.

What it does

  • The Shelly EM, with its two current clamps, measures the power produced by the solar system and the power exchanged with the grid.
  • The Shelly Pro 2 has two dry-contact relays, wired to the heat pump's two SG-Ready inputs.
  • Combining the two contacts gives the states defined by SG-Ready, from blocked through normal operation to recommended and forced operation, as set out in the heat pump manual.
  • When the exchange with the grid shows export above the chosen threshold for a few minutes, the automation moves to the recommended switch-on state.
  • When the surplus runs out, the heat pump returns to normal operation under its own controller.
  • The Shelly app shows generation, import and export over time, which helps in choosing the thresholds.
For three-phase systems, systems with a storage battery, or to drive the water heater and the wallbox from the surplus as well, write to us from the contacts section and we will suggest the right kit.

How to install it

Network and consumer unit. The 8-module enclosure is mounted near the main consumer unit, where the grid exchange line and the inverter line run. The Pro 2 and the EM take up four modules, the rest stay spare. The Pro 2 connects to the router with the 10-metre network cable; the Shelly EM uses Wi-Fi. The 1-metre cables are left for future modules with a network port.
Modules and clamps. The Pro 2 and the EM are powered at 230V. The clamps open and close around a single conductor, the live one, without cutting the cable: one on the main exchange line, one on the inverter output, with the arrow pointing the way the manufacturer specifies. The 230V connections must be made by qualified personnel, with the system isolated at the consumer unit.
SG-Ready contacts and wiring. The Pro 2's two dry contacts are wired to the heat pump's SG-Ready terminals, following the pump manual: every manufacturer states which input corresponds to which state. The kit includes the crimp ferrules for flexible conductors and the Wago connectors for the joints in the consumer unit. The SG-Ready function has to be enabled on the heat pump.
App and check. The two modules are added in the Shelly app. On the EM you check that the signs are right: generation positive during the day, export and import consistent with the meter. On the Pro 2 you try every combination of the two contacts and confirm on the heat pump display that the state changes as expected.
Recommended automations. Recommended-operation state when export stays above a threshold close to the heat pump's power draw for at least ten minutes; back to normal operation when the house has been drawing from the grid for a few minutes. Waiting times and hysteresis keep it from switching too often. The forced-operation state is best used only if the manufacturer recommends it.
Contents verified. The Shelly Pro 2 and the EM are DIN-rail modules and sit in the 8-module enclosure included, with spare ways; the two 50A clamps connect to the EM's two channels. Also supplied are the crimp ferrules and the Wago connectors for wiring inside the consumer unit, the short patch leads for the board and a 10-metre cable to link the Pro 2 to the router.

Before you order

Do you need a hub?

No. The Pro 2 connects to the router with a network cable and the Shelly EM over Wi-Fi; the automations between the two are created in the Shelly app. No coordinator and no paid software are needed.

Is my heat pump compatible?

It has to have SG-Ready inputs or an equivalent input for an external enable signal: you will find it in the manual, under SG-Ready or smart grid. The kit drives those inputs; the pump decides how to use the surplus according to its own logic.

Does it work with Alexa, Google and Apple?

With Alexa and Google Home the Shelly modules work through the official integrations, but what this application mainly needs is the Shelly automations. The modules also work with Home Assistant, which is useful for more elaborate logic. Apple Home requires an intermediate system such as Home Assistant.

Do you need an electrician?

Yes: the modules and the clamps are installed in the consumer unit, at 230V, and the contacts have to be wired to the heat pump's control unit. The connections must be made by qualified personnel with the system isolated.

What happens if the internet goes down?

The modules stay reachable from the app on the home network and keep measuring. The automations between the EM and the Pro 2 that go through the Shelly service resume once the connection is back; in the meantime the heat pump runs in its normal state.

My system is three-phase: will this work?

The kit is designed for single-phase systems. On a three-phase system a three-phase meter is needed in place of the Shelly EM: write to us from the contacts section with your meter and inverter type, and we will suggest the right combination.

Can I use the surplus for other things too?

Yes: the same Shelly EM can also control an electric water heater, dehumidifiers or other loads, by adding relays in the enclosure's spare ways. Write to us from the contacts section for the right kit.

What if a product is out of stock on Amazon?

Write to us from the contact section quoting the kit code: we will point you to an alternative that fits the other parts, so the kit keeps working as described. Avoid swapping a component for a similar model without first checking the protocol and the compatibility with the rest of the system.

Why buy on Amazon?

Purchase, delivery, returns and warranty are handled by Amazon, under the terms shown to you when you order. We put the kit together and checked it ourselves: the parts are chosen to work together and the cart adds them all, in the right quantities, in a single step.
