What it does
- The Shelly Gas LPG continuously measures the gas in the air, at the low point of the room where LPG collects.
- If there is a leak, the detector sounds and sends a notification to your phone.
- The actuator wired to the detector turns the lever of the gas valve and closes it, as the manufacturer specifies.
- In the app you see the state of the detector and the valve, in the second home as well.
- The detector can also trigger other Shelly actions, such as starting an extractor switched by a relay.
- The valve is only reopened by hand, once the cause of the leak has been checked.

How it is installed
Wi-Fi network. The detector and the actuator are run over Wi-Fi, with no hub. Check with your phone that the router's signal reaches the room with the gas appliance properly: in a kitchen it usually does, in an outside boiler room or a farmhouse often not. If it is weak, extend the coverage with a repeater before you install.
The LPG detector. LPG is heavier than air and collects low down: the detector goes on the wall near the floor, in the room with the gas appliance, at the heights and distances the manufacturer specifies. Keep it away from doors, windows and hoods that disperse the air. It runs off the mains: if a fixed 230V connection is needed, a qualified electrician does it with the supply isolated.
Actuator on the valve. The actuator fits onto a quarter-turn gas ball valve with a lever, upstream of the hob or the boiler, and is wired to the detector as the manufacturer instructs. Before fitting it, check that the lever turns without force. No work is done on the gas pipework: if the valve has to be replaced, a registered engineer is needed.
App and pairing. In the Shelly app add the detector with the setup wizard, name it after its room and check the actuator shows up and responds. Try closing it from the app with the gas appliances off, then open it again by hand. Turn on the alarm and fault notifications.
Recommended automations. Leave automatic valve shut-off switched on for alarms at all times. Add notifications for several members of the family, especially for second homes. If you have an extractor or a motorised window driven by a Shelly relay, have the alarm start it, without using sockets or switches in the room where the leak is.
Contents verified. The valve actuator is the accessory the manufacturer intends for the Shelly Gas, and the two devices are managed together in the Shelly app, with no hub. The kit needs no extra accessories beyond a gas ball valve with a lever, which most installations already have.

Before you order
Do you need a hub?
No. The Shelly Gas connects straight to the home Wi-Fi and the actuator connects to the detector, as the manufacturer describes. Everything is managed from the Shelly app: all you need is good Wi-Fi coverage in the room with the gas appliance.
Will it work with natural gas?
No: this kit uses the LPG version of the detector, that is the gas from bottles and tanks, which has to be fitted low down. Natural gas is lighter than air and needs the dedicated version, fitted high up. If you are on natural gas, get in touch through the contact page and we will tell you the right kit.
Will it fit my valve?
The actuator fits quarter-turn gas ball valves with a lever, within the sizes the manufacturer states. It does not fit wheel-head valves. If in doubt, send us a photo of the valve through the contact page and we will check.
Do you need an electrician or a gas engineer?
Not to fit the actuator onto the existing valve lever. If the detector needs a fixed 230V connection, that is done by a qualified person with the supply isolated. Any work on the gas pipes or replacing the valve is for a registered gas engineer.
What happens if there is no internet?
The detector carries on working in the house: it sounds and drives the actuator wired to it, as the manufacturer describes. Without internet, though, no notification reaches your phone. In a power cut the mains-powered detector goes off.
Does it replace the installation's safety rules?
No. The kit adds an alert and an automatic shut-off, but it does not replace the mandatory devices and checks on the gas installation, nor the servicing of the appliances. Test the detector regularly using the manufacturer's test procedure.
Does it work with Alexa, Google and Apple?
Shelly devices connect to Alexa and Google Home through the integrations in the Shelly app, as far as each model allows. For gas safety what counts is the detector-to-actuator chain, which does not depend on the voice assistants.
