Shelly 1PM Gen3 kit fitted behind existing 503 sockets, 2 sockets

Two 16A Shelly 1PM Gen3 relays with consumption metering hide in the 503 box and make two wall sockets smart, with no plugs or adapters on show. Suited to fan heaters, floor lamps and towel rails: switching on a schedule, by hand from the Shelly app or with Alexa and Google, over Wi-Fi and without a hub.

Who it is forAnyone who wants to switch the wall sockets without smart plugs sticking out.
What you monitorTwo wall sockets, with the consumption of each one metered.
How you control itShelly app, schedules, Alexa, Google and a wall push-button if you want one.
InstallationBy an electrician: relay in the socket box or in a junction box, at 230V.

What it does

  • Each Shelly 1PM Gen3 goes in the socket's 503 back box and switches its supply: the socket stays exactly as it was.
  • From the app you switch the connected appliance on and off, for example the bathroom heater or the floor lamp in the living room.
  • The relay meters consumption: you see how much the appliance draws and how much energy it uses over the month.
  • The schedules switch the towel rail on in the morning and the floor lamps off at a set time.
  • A nearby push-button or switch can be wired to the relay's input for manual control.
  • With the Shelly integrations the sockets answer Alexa and Google voice commands.

How it is installed

Wi-Fi network. The relays join the home 2.4GHz Wi-Fi directly, with no hub. Inside a wall box the signal drops: check with a phone that the router reaches right next to the chosen sockets. If the signal is weak, plan a repeater before you fit anything.
The 1PM Gen3 relay. The relay goes between the circuit and the socket, following the manufacturer's diagram, inside the socket's 503 box or in the nearest junction box, and it needs a neutral, which a socket always has. Check that the load is within the relay's 16A. The 230V connections must be made by qualified personnel with the supply isolated.
Connectors and back boxes. The Sonoff quick connectors in the kit are for wiring the relay inside the box. The deep 503 back boxes and the junction box are optional: they are only needed if the module will not fit behind the switch insert. Space behind a socket is tight: a deep box keeps the conductors from being crushed and makes the job safer.
Shelly app. Switch the supply back on, download the Shelly Smart Control app and add the two relays following the wizard. Name each one after the appliance it feeds, such as “bathroom heater” or “living room lamp”. Then link the Shelly account to Alexa or Google Home from the assistant's app, so the relays show up there too.
Recommended automations. Set the towel rail for an hour in the morning on weekdays and switch the floor lamps off at midnight. For the fan heater, set a maximum run time so it does not stay on if you forget it. Check the consumption figures after a few weeks.
Contents verified. The two Shelly 1PM Gen3 run in the same app, with schedules stored on the device and consumption measurement. The kit includes the Sonoff quick connectors for wiring the relays. Deep 503 back boxes and the junction box are optional, for when the relay will not fit behind the socket.

Before you order

Do you need a hub?

No. The Shelly devices connect straight to the home Wi-Fi on the 2.4GHz band and are managed in the Shelly Smart Control app. There is no hub to buy: you only need a router with good coverage where the devices are installed.

Does it work with Alexa and Google?

Yes, with the Shelly integrations: you link the Shelly account in the Alexa app or in Google Home and the devices show up ready for voice control and routines. Shelly also works with Home Assistant, for anyone already running the house from there.

Do you need an electrician?

Yes. The relays wire between the line and the sockets, inside the 503 boxes or in the junction boxes. 230V connections must be made by qualified personnel, with the installation isolated. Setting things up in the app, though, you can do yourself on your phone.

Can I switch a water heater or a fan heater?

Yes, as long as the load stays within the relay's 16A, as the manufacturer states. For heavy continuous loads, a water heater for instance, go over the cable cross-section with your electrician and possibly a contactor. For a heater use a model with a thermostat and safety cut-outs.

What happens if there is no internet?

The schedules saved on the relays carry on working, as does any push-button wired to their input. Control from outside the house and the voice assistants come back when the connection is restored.

Can I add more sockets?

Yes: every socket you want to control needs its own relay, and they are all run from the same Shelly app alongside lights, roller shutters and sensors. Get in touch through the contact page for a checked configuration.

Are batteries included?

Not needed: the relays are powered from the 230V circuit in the back box. The kit contains no remotes or battery sensors; if you add a wireless button or a sensor later, the batteries follow the manufacturer's specifications.

What if a product is out of stock on Amazon?

It happens, above all with some variants. Get in touch through the contact page quoting the kit code and the item that is missing: we will point you to an alternative that works with the other parts, so you keep a combination we have checked and you do not have to hunt for a substitute that fits the rest.

Why buy on Amazon?

We put the kit together and checked it ourselves, choosing parts that work with each other. Purchase, payment, returns and warranty are handled by Amazon, item by item: delivery times, returns and warranty are shown on Amazon when you buy, under each product seller's own terms.
