Victron Energy Orion XS Smart 12/12-50A non-isolated DC-DC charger, 700W, marine model
New version of the Victron Energy (Orion) DC-DC charger, rated at 50 amps, a low electromagnetic emission model ideal for marine installations.
A version for 24-volt systems and for mixed 12–24V and 24–12V systems is also available — contact us for details. This new version offers many innovative features compared with the previous models, which were rated at 18A and 30A (at 12V). First of all, the power output, now up to 50A (700W), though it can easily be set to a lower value via Bluetooth.
Its dimensions are considerably smaller than the previous models, despite the higher power output. It also does away with the heat sink fitted to the lower-power models. In fact, this new 50A model runs very cool, thanks to a marked improvement in efficiency, now up to 98.5% (compared with around 85% in the previous models, which generated far more heat). This new model also features a Victron VE.Direct interface, so it can be connected to the Cerbo GX and fully integrated with the rest of the Victron Energy system.
Another interesting new feature is the IP65 protection rating, which makes it practically waterproof and therefore suitable for installation in particularly damp locations. Like its predecessors, this model is a genuine 4-stage battery charger (bulk, absorption, float and storage).
It works with any type of alternator, both conventional and smart. It has a built-in system to detect whether the engine is running, making installation extremely simple.
In standby, it draws a very low current of just 1.5 mA (milliamps), so over a month of standby operation it uses only 1Ah of the battery!
Naturally, this new model is also fully configurable from a smartphone or tablet via Bluetooth. Simply install the Victron Connect app.
The 50A output current can also be reduced via this app. This is a useful feature when, for example, the alternator isn't very powerful and overheats at full power, or when the battery has too low a capacity and would be damaged by charging at 50A. Example: you have a 100Ah AGM battery, but already know you'll replace it with a 100Ah lithium battery in the future. The AGM you currently have must be charged at no more than 20A to avoid damaging it, so you lower the DC-DC charger's output to 20A. Once you switch to the lithium battery, you can raise the charger's output back up to 50A.
