DC Surge Protective Device Type 2 Phoenix Contact 2800642 VAL-MS 600DC-PV/2+V

The Phoenix Contact VAL-MS 600DC-PV/2+V surge protective device (article number 2800642) is a Type 2 (class II) surge limiter designed specifically for the direct current side of photovoltaic systems up to 800 V DC of continuous operating voltage. It is installed on a 35 mm DIN rail inside the DC combiner box, between the photovoltaic generator and the inverter, and protects the modules, the string cables and the inverter's MPPT input against surges induced by indirect lightning strikes and by switching operations.

The device uses the classic Y configuration (2+V) with three protection paths — L+ / L−, L+ / PE and L− / PE — built with varistors and a series spark gap, a solution that eliminates the leakage current to earth under normal conditions. It consists of a 3-position base with pluggable, thermally monitored protection elements: each cartridge carries an optical status indicator that shows when the element has reached its end of life and must be replaced, without having to dismantle the wiring. The failure behaviour is open circuit (Open-Circuit Mode).

Key features

Type 2 protection for PV stringsIt limits surges of indirect atmospheric and switching origin on the DC side, protecting modules, cables and the inverter's MPPT inputs.
Operating voltage up to 800 V DCThe Ucpv of 800 V DC covers photovoltaic strings with a rated open-circuit voltage of up to 600 V DC.
Three-path Y configurationThe L+/L−, L+/PE and L−/PE paths with a series spark gap eliminate the leakage current to earth in normal service.
Pluggable cartridges with optical indicationThe three thermally monitored protection elements are plug-in replaceable and show their status with an optical indicator on each module.
Nominal discharge 15 kA, maximum 40 kAIn of 15 kA and Imax of 40 kA (8/20 µs) with a protection level Up ≤ 2.7 kV.
DIN rail mounting inside the box53.4 mm wide on a 35 mm rail, M5 screw terminals up to 35 mm², IP20 rating with all terminals occupied.
