The Phoenix Contact VAL-SPP-T2-275-3+1-UT/32 (item 1791818) is a Type 2 / Class II surge protective device (SPD) with pluggable protective modules. It is built in the 3+1 configuration, designed for three-phase five-wire networks with separate neutral and PE (L1, L2, L3, N, PE), hence for TT and TN-S systems.
It is installed in the three-phase distribution board, downstream of any Type 1 arrester, to limit transient surges of indirect atmospheric origin and those generated by grid switching operations, protecting household appliances, electronic equipment, inverters and automation panels. In the 3+1 configuration the three phase varistors discharge to the neutral and a gas discharge tube connects the neutral to the protective conductor: this achieves a low protection level without permanent leakage current to earth. Each protection path is provided by a pluggable module with an optical status indicator, which allows the single exhausted module to be replaced without touching the wiring.
